While I was sitting on the patio last evening, I heard a Meadowlark start singing his distinctive song, "seeoo, seeyeer".  Or you may call it a whistle.  Soon after, I heard another song from a bird I was fairly certain was a Red-winged Blackbird.  His song goes something like, "o-ka-leee".  I just happened to have my camera with me in hopes of catching another bird, but I was very entertained by what I called the "Bird Sing-off."

Mr. Meadowlark came out on top in the
best of song category.

Mr. Red-winged Blackbird got high marks
for being brave enough to compete with
Mr. Meadowlark.

I watched and listened for quite some time.  Finally, their performance came to an end and they flew off.  In the same direction.  Maybe they had to perform for another lucky audience elsewhere.

Until next time...

  5. Very cool!

    Great listening.

And you used it as a Photo Op, too.

Doesn't get much better than this.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

  6. Really nice photos you captured of the birdy chorus. I love listening to them when I'm outside. I don't think I've ever seen a meadowlark in person.

  9. A funny ending...you must have a very good zoom to have captured them this way! I love hearing the bids sing, and I think you can identify which is which much better than I can!

  13. Cheryl, I love the meadowlark's song. We have them around sometimes although I haven't seen or heard them for a couple of years. The red winged blackbird is one of the first song birds of spring in our area and I like their trill. Great photos!

  17. They say that Meadowlarks have some of the prettiest 'songs' of all birds... I love hearing the Carolina Wrens also. They are amazingly loud to be such small birds...

I love spring when we can sleep with the windows opened --and can hear the birds singing early in the morning. AWESOME.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  20. Wow you got to be the judge of the singing competition. And the birds have no clue who won. LOL A lovely moment, indeed. take care.

  21. Love this post. Very clever and great shots.
Don't suppose votes were swayed by the Meadowlarks flashy attire do you.

  23. Cheryl you funny! I love this post. I wonder what the birds would do without powerlines? And my wine time chairs Under the Oaks. Those gazillion trees they have to perch their little birdie selves on just don't seem to do! A Meadowlark, lucky you.

  28. Just catching up a bit...wish you could have captured the sing-off with a bit of video. I am always intrigued by birdsong, but no so few of them.

Hope that you really are feeling much better now. I was sorry to learn that you'd been under the weather.
