A Missouri barn

This week's barn is at home on a farm in mid-Missouri.  It looks to be sporting fairly new doors.  Let's zoom in for a closer look.

The doors are definitely newer than the barn.  Peeking inside, you can see that it's a working barn, housing large round hay bales.

You still see a few of the small square bales in hay fields from time to time, but most farmers, at least in our area, bale their hay into large round bales.

That brings me to mention the elevator that was seen in a previous barn photo I shared a couple of weeks ago.  Someone asked what it was used for.  Farmers would stack small hay bales on a wagon and haul it from the field to the barn and would unload on the elevator which would take the bales to the hayloft.  You can see the elevator here.  My dad had such an elevator at one time and if I remember right it was hooked up somehow to the tractor to move the bales along.

Back in the days before the large round baled hay, boys old enough to hoist a hay bale could make some pretty good money during the  summer hauling hay.

  2. that's a nice one....yeah, that's all you see around here too, the round bales....although you can find the square ones to feed horses, they stack nicer!

  4. Round bales are the way of choice around here also. I used to buy the square bales for my horse, less waste and I didn't trust that there wasn't mold in the round ones.

  5. Another beauty, Cheryl!! I remember hauling lots of the small ones myself... LOL! Lots of hard work growing up on a farm, but I'm pretty sure it was a very good thing! blessings ~ tanna

  7. Another great barn with new doors. I'm glad that you really analyze a situation. I'd have probably missed the new doors in order to focus on less significant things. I've seen a few of those elevators sitting about.

  10. The fact that it is a working barn explains the new doors - - - and I'm glad! As long as it is needed, it will be preserved. We are losing far too many of our old barns.

  11. i like this barn, and LOVE that you put a fence in front of it (one of my favorite ways to photograph!) :)

i loved baling hay in Wis and unloading the hay wagon onto the elevator. :)

  13. In the west we didn't have those large round bales. Hay in this part of the country was bales weighing 80 to 90 pounds and were either 2 wire or 3 wire alfalfa bales. They were stacked in the barn much like these round bales are. It just took longer to fill the barn! Thanks for sharing.

  15. I guess I didn't know you were raised on a farm or I forget.

Pretty barn today with the new doors.

And lastly I didn't have a clue what an elevator was.

  17. We were driving down the road a couple of days ago and I was rubber necking, looking at barns. My Hubs said, what did you see..... so I had to explain to him how you have me looking at barns all the time.

  18. This barn looks better kept than most. Yes, around here it is mostly round hay bales, once in awhile you see the square ones. They must be old fashioned and harder to make.

  19. Very beautiful barn. There's something about an old barn that makes you stop and just look at it, right? Love the picture and quote from the previous post. Don't know how I missed that one! Hope you had a nice day!

  20. This is a rally nice barn...and a big one. It is great fun to watch the farmers send the bails up to the loft. I have watched them do it here at our barn. Pretty cool. genie

  21. I'm seeing lots of round bales around here too- but I prefer square bales-I think too much of the round goes to waste- at least with my animals. Nice old barn!

  22. I see huge hay bales inside. Hubby made those but not that big ^_^

  23. I haven't seen any small bales of hay around Kansas City lately... just the big round ones.
Love your barn photo! The two little windows almost look like eyes and the open door like a mouth. This barn has personality.

  24. Like our old barn, we had to replace doors too.

Up in real hay country where most good alfalfa comes from they are going to the large squares, really large, 2,000 lbs or more.

  26. ... not sure how to follow "Anonymous" but I'll give it a go.. :)

The top photo's composition I really like but enjoy the close up and a better peek at the round hay bales. I grew up hoisting and stacking small square bales... and I learned to wear jeans, long sleeves and gloves even on the hottest summer day. I always loved it when the neighborhood boys thought they could earn "easy" money and showed up in shorts and tee-shirt. Didn't take them long to either scamper off with their tail between their legs or shut-up and work (after running home and changing their clothes)! :)

  27. A very charming barn, Cheryl, an could probably tell some stories too. How well I remember seeing the men hoist those bales of hay up to the second level, and of my sisters and i playing on them. Thanks for the memory.
    Enjoy your week,
    Hugs,
    Sue
