It seems that letter writing is becoming a lost art. How many of us take the time to write a letter on beautiful stationery and then mail it to its destination?
We now just pick up the telephone or cell phone or send off a quick text message using in most cases abbreviations. Can you imagine a lovely handwritten letter with LOL or <grin> or HAGD in it?
Another form of communication is emailing. I'm not very good at emailing. I sometimes forget to check my emails for days on end. Now if I would get a nice handwritten letter, I would open it up immediately and sit down to read every word. I love to get cards and enjoy the handwritten messages that are usually included.
A favorite form of communication for me is talking on the phone. I like to hear the caller's voice, much can be understood by hearing their tone of voice. And there's nothing sweeter than hearing a loved one's voice saying "I love you" at the end of the conversation!
What is your favorite form of communication? Do you write letters to your friends and family? Or do you just pick up the phone to hear their voice? Do you enjoy emailing or texting?
Here's to a good year filled with lovely words and thoughts sent your way no matter what the method of sending is!
Until next time...
I confess... I do not write letters, but I do use the email a lot. I also use the phone, especially for friends and family.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct when you say letter writing has become a lost art. And...... postage is going up AGAIN. More and more, people will be turning to their email.
Sadly since I got my computer, letter writing has ceased. Also my handwriting has gone to the bad place.
ReplyDeleteMost of my family works for or has retired from the Post Office. Each email I send puts a nail in their hearts. Bad Patti.
I use to be very good at writing letters. When I was a young bride and mother I wrote my parents faithfully each week, telling them of out life and what was happening. Also kept up with friends by mail.
ReplyDeleteI dislike talking on the phone. I use the phone only to relay a message or a need.
I love blogging, fb and e-mailing. Strange, since I'm older that I would be such a fan of these things.....but not the cell phone :o)
Face to Face for me Cheryl! I am not good on the phone and too much of a procrastinator for writing letters. I hate texting and would always prefer to hear a voice! I do use email because it is the only way to contact people I enjoy blogging with.
ReplyDeleteI guess my favorite is over a cup of coffee. Texting has become one of the more common with my children... they most often respond to that! Calls to my mom. E-mails to many of my friends. Rarely do I write a letter though I love them so. I'm afraid they are becoming a lost art, too. blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteI'm not a letter writer, my life is so mundane, but I love to send cards that express my thoughts for someone else. Like to e-mail, hate to talk on the phone. So I guess that I am a mixed bag.
ReplyDeleteI do prefer writing over verbal communication. It gives me the opportunity to edit. Sometimes, I know that you'll find this hard to believe, but sometimes the little guard on my lips falls asleep. So, while I don't write a lot of letters, I do write some. I write a lot of emails and I make lots of comments. I'm a regular Chatty Cathy.
ReplyDeleteI must confess as well, I am not disciplined enough to write and mail out letters....Now, my husband and I do still write letters to each other from time to time! What drives me crazy are phone messages...for some reason, I do not like having to go through all the steps to hear a phone message...Guess I'll have to stay with Facebook...
ReplyDeleteHave a great day..
I do love to get cards and letters but then don't know what to do with them. If I keep them they add to the clutter on counters and in closets. If I throw it out am I tossing out all that effort and sentiment, too??!!! I have firends who make beautiful fancy cards and I never feel good about putting them in the recycle bin!

my mother and i communicated by letters (weekly, sometimes almost daily) for many years after i moved 1100 miles away, but she's been gone for 7 yrs now...
ReplyDeletei prefer emails to anything else. i am a phone-a-phobic. hate phone calls. :)
An interesting and thought provoking post Cheryl.!!
ReplyDeleteI hate mobile phones, can not text and hate receiving them.I do use the land line phone and ring my mother every week,I do send emails and I use SKPE a lot to talk to family and friends all over the world,it is lovely to see them face to face and have a good old chat.!!
I do agree that receiving a letter is lovely, but I rarely send letters myself now as the arthritis in my hands prevents me from holding a pen sometimes.
Best wishes Carolyn.
Great topic today, Cheryl.
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful that we have so many ways to communicate now. I have yet to text, but do enjoy the convenience and speed of e-mail.
I have recently begun regular letter writing to my sister. Since her stroke left her unable to say very many words, it seemed as though phone calls were no longer the best way to communicate. Knowing that she looks forward to the mailman's arrival, I try to send her a letter or card weekly. I don't write much, but I try to make the letter look pretty and add stickers, etc. Just hoping to add a small bright spot to her long days.
I am addicted to email, mine comes up in the AM and i turn it off at bedtime, and i spend an hour each morning just reading and replying to emails. i don't mail anything, have not written a letter in 20 years, that is when my mother died. there was not email then i and i had to write and mail pictures. i don't want things in the mail and much rather get and email card than a real one. email is my preferred way to communicate, Facebook i can't stand even though i do have one so i can see family pics. rarely use the phone, but did when mother was alive. dont text because i don't have a cell phone. i have friends who used to write but never got a return, so they gave up and went to email. there are still many whole like sending and receiving mail though, so whatever floats your boat is my motto. i used to stamps last year
ReplyDeleteI love a hand written letter or note. I am not good at doing these but I love receiving them. I enjoy a good visit on the phone with a friend; but even that doesn't happen very often. I really think that technology has overcome us all and I worry about the younger generation being able to even communicate on a personal level.
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you for sharing these thoughts; we need to bring back some of the old time communications such as a visit, phone call or letter.
It's been quite a long time since I've written a real letter or received one! These days I'm just too impatient to wait on snail mail.
ReplyDeleteI have posted about the death of letters too. Tehre was a time I bought matching stationary and envelopes. Stickers to match and sealing wax. That time is gone. It's still something special to hold a letter written by my mother now that she's gone, in my hands.
ReplyDeleteI too e mail and text. I just spent 72 minutes (yes, my cell phone told me) on the phone actually talking to a girlfriend. That was long overdue.
Hi Cheryl!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more! I love to get hand written letters in the mail. Let's see . . . I think I got one about 10 or 15 years ago! I can clearly remember buying beautiful stationary for gifts and loving to receive it too. Do they even sell it anymore? I rarely ever even get a thank-you note for a wedding gift these days, so sad.
My mother and I were talking about penmanship just this week. How many kids these days even know who to write in cursive? My grandkids know how, but don't use it. The times they are a changin'!
Hugs,
Barb
I used to write letters all of the time. Not so much anymore. It really is a shame. My best form of communication is email. I've never been one to talk on the phone much. I think that is because for years my job required a lot of phone work.
ReplyDeleteYou sure got me to thinking. I think I'll sit down and send a home made card to each of my kids and grandkids telling them how wonderful they are. That would be 16 cards :o
Have a great rest of the weekend and weekend!
Deanna
I don't write letters, but I do still send cards. When I was a little girl, my grandma and I would write letters to one another. And when my niece was young she and I would write letters to one another. I like email, phone and a little texting. I don't have a facebook account. And I don't like checking my voicemail on my cell phone. I'd rather just call the person back and speak to them.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend Cheryl!
My favorite way to communicate now is EMAIL.... Love it... All of my blog comments come on my email... IF I have that person's email, I sometimes write them back... I hate the phone (just ask my family and my best friend). I will text with my kids (since it's the only way I can catch up with them.. ha)...
ReplyDeleteI long getting snail mail Christmas cards ---and believe it or not, this year, we got more than we got last year or the year before. So---that is a good thing...
Hugs,
Betsy
I love the real handwritten notes...think I even did a post about it on my Pics and Pieces blog sometime in the past...but I also love email...would be lost without it.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the handwritten note or card. I still send notes occasionally, but can't remember the last time I hand wrote a letter!
ReplyDeleteCarolyn
I remember also writing so many letters to my many friends when I was younger! And getting stationery was such a wonderful gift! I loved going to the store and picking out a new box. Memories! I really enjoying texting. Get right to the point. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI miss letters. I guess that is why I enjoy Christmas cards so much- it just brings a touch of personal back into my life that I miss otherwise.
ReplyDeleteIn the good ole days, I remember writing letters on the prettiest stationery I could find. Now, I haven't written a letter in a very long time. It's really to bad we lost that!
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I communicate a lot thru e-mail. (Although I do send my hand-made greeting cards to friends for holidays and special occasions.)
ReplyDeleteHowever, I can recall the days of receiving letters in the mail. There was something exciting about that. I get excited about e-mails too!
Oh, I do miss the days of letter writing.
ReplyDeleteI remember I had lots of 'pen-pals'.
Those were the days !
I would have to say at this point in my life, my communication is done mostly by phone.
I am terrible at checking my email, and I do not ever text...not really sure if I know how ..LOL.
Have a wonderful day!
You know I love getting a letter - but I don't write much anymore. I have to tell you I type much faster and the email gets sent faster - and I'm fast. LOL
ReplyDeleteLove, sandie
