Flower Shopping and Rain

We've had so much rain lately and it's back again today.  However, we finally saw some sun yesterday so my daughter got off work early and we headed out around 2:30 pm to get some flowers for planting this coming weekend.

So many beautiful colors and varieties to choose from!  I saw a few flowers that I don't remember seeing before, but I usually stick to buying those that I know will likely survive our hot and humid Missouri summers.

One hardy flower I've discovered in recent years and like is called Angelonia.  It comes in various shades, I bought a few in purple.  I also love Calibrachoa, which some call Million Bells.

Except for the Calibrachoa hanging baskets, most of the flowers in the trunk of my car belong to my daughter.  Mine took up the back seat and we had a good laugh as we were trying to find room for a few new flower pots and a few other needed items.  I wanted a few other flowers but we simply didn't have room.

I've been looking for lemon grass as I've read it keeps mosquitoes away and I want to get a few nice geraniums for the front pots.  We plan to get some new mulch in the truck this weekend.  Also, I'm debating on a few more perennials to expand a flower bed.  What fun it is to plan flower gardens!  Did I mention recently that I might downsize and not plant so much?  I think I've changed my mind.  ☺

We had a fun afternoon as we enjoyed the sunshine and beautiful flowers.  I was limping badly by the time I got home and worn out, but I am always happy to take a little road trip to shop for flowers.

Happy Wednesday to you!

  1. Shopping for flowers is so much fun. I did a little of that today, but will most certainly be getting more as time goes on.

  2. awww...Springtime in the Midwest. We don't put flowers out here until after Memorial Day for fear of a hard frost or freeze. It is supposed to get below freezing again tonight. I am so tired of all this.

Sounds like you found some beauties. I am not sure what we are doing here this year with me being gone most of June and then the house being in an uproar of change here. xo Diana

  4. Limping?! What is wrong with your foot? Did I know, and then forget? Oh, I'm sorry! I am in a walking boot now myself, I sprained a ligament. The flowers you got, I have never heard of! Are they in the pictures? Maybe you could post just those two, so we can get a good look at them. A Million Bells sounds so beautiful!

  7. It's so difficult to stick with a plan when visiting the Garden Centers. Everything in our heads flies straight out when we see the lovely potted plants. I certainly hope that I do not go crazy this summer because I truly do not want to spend a lot of time tending pots. I want to look and enjoy...maybe I need a visit to the faux flowers aisle at Hobby Lobby. Talk me outta that!

  8. Sounds like a fun time...I need to go flower shopping. I have not even looked at flowers...usually, I look whether I buy or not. My daughter said she heard/read that marigolds repel mosquitoes. I though I would like to plant a few just to see.

  9. Yes, lemongrass keep mozzie away but you have to keep changing the plants else the mozzie will wise up, There ate two types . one with red stem and one green stem the green ones we use for cooking and beverage. The red ones are more effective keeping the mozzie away. You can alternate it with screwpine leaves.

  12. I say plant as much as you want, life is short and flowers are on the list of its the little things that matter, the joy of looking at them and caring for them... thanks for info on lemon grass, will see if I can find some if our drought ever breaks

  14. Ha ha, I know how those plans to downsize can go astray as soon as you see all that is available. Impossible to resist. I have also planted Angelonia and love the flower. Our states have been hammered lately but I never complain about water--been through too many droughts. Do feel for those under water though. Been there too. Sure wish Nature could learn moderation.

  16. Cheryl, any kind of shopping with our daughters is fun. You certainly picked some pretty flowers for your gardens. I too have heard that lemon grass is good for keeping mosquitoes at bay. Some times I say I am just going to buy fake flowers...then I get the real ones. LOL. Blessings for a great weekend. We are having horrid rains and will till Sat. morning. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  17. What fun! I enjoy hanging out with my daughter so much. I just can't seem to get into flower mood this spring. Not sure what's going on. BTW, Branson and Hollister got hit super bad with flooding. My cousin lives in West Plains and that little city was kind of washed away. She doesn't think it will be revived, but of course it will.

  22. Hi Cheryl!

If the rain makes everything that beautiful...let it rain! I love to go to the greenhouse, and on, Mother's Day, the flowers always look extra beautiful! I have been really sick, so my flowers have suffered. Hopefully, th eres plenty of time to get them back in shape. Enjoy!

    Hugs,
    Barb
