Another Year Older

"Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what happened."   ~ Jennifer Yane

Another year older...I really can't believe how fast the years are flying by now.

How is it that when you get older your knees hurt, your back hurts, but your head still feels like it's thirtysomething?  ☺

I am thankful that God has given me this many years, I am very blessed.

Our son met us for a birthday dinner Sunday at our usual meeting place along I-70 between his home in KC and ours.  He gave me the magazines pictured above and a nice gift card.  He knows what I like!  We had a lovely meal and visit.

Our daughter went out with BG and I for my birthday dinner.  Then we stopped by her house for strawberry cake and DQ ice cream.  Yum, yum!  Her gift was a stack of very cleverly made cards with a gift card tucked inside one of them.

I laughed at this card because she was the child who would hide from me in the middle of a clothes rack at the store!  lol!

Thank you to my sweet family for making my birthday so special!  And thank you to my dear friend, V, who hasn't forgotten my birthday in over 50 years!

                                    💮 💮 💮 💮 💮 💮 💮 💮 💮 💮

Remember the blue and white checked sofa that I saw in a flea market?  Well, BG and I took the truck to the shop last weekend with the intentions of buying it if it was still there.  And it was...but on closer inspection, we decided it wasn't quite sturdy or comfortable enough.

It's back to purging, cleaning out closets, and deciding what to keep and what to get rid of.  One thing about getting older...I am finding out that I'm growing less nostalgic than I used to be and it's becoming easier to give up things that I don't especially love but have hung onto because a loved one gave it to me.  I used to feel that I was throwing a bit of that person away if I didn't keep everything they gave me.  Maybe I am getting wiser along with growing older.

Now that colder weather has returned, I've been fixing some comfort foods.  I'll share a recipe we love that only needs a side salad and some hot bread to go along with it.

Dinner in the Oven - Chicken and Stove Top Stuffing

1 pkg Stove Top Stuffing Mix, chicken flavored
1 2/3 cup hot water
1 1/2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut in bite-sized pieces
1/2 cup sour cream
1 can cream of chicken soup

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Add hot water to stuffing mix and stir.  (I add a
teaspoon of chicken base to the hot water.)

Place chicken pieces in bottom of 9x13-inch baking
dish.  Mix soup and sour cream together and pour
over chicken pieces.  Spoon stuffing over the top.

Bake, uncovered, for 40 minutes or until done.

Enjoy the rest of your week!
xo Cheryl

  1. Hi Cheryl and HaPPy BiRTHdaY!!! Sounds like you had a wonderful time. The magazines are great. That's too bad about the sofa. Like you, it is easier for me to get rid of stuff I no longer need....I am all about simplicity these days! lol
I hope you will have a nice weekend.

    1. Thank you, Mildred! I did have a great time. And about the sofa, I guess I wasn't meant to have it. :) I probably need something in leather or faux leather downstairs.

    2. Came back by to read your birthday wishes.....we have a faux leather sofa that is actually polyester and now that I know you love cats, I think you would love fabric like this. My cats can't/won't scratch on this and also, if they spit up, it just washes off with water! Just thought I would share.

  4. HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY Cheryl!! Your daughter's gift is totally awesome! She gave you her memories, and a little piece of herself. Good thing you examined that couch more closely. YES, the older we get, the faster time passes. And there is an actual scientific reason for this, I read it somewhere. I am like you, throwing out things that I never would have. I am also in the middle of purging!

    1. Thank you, Sandra. I used to panic when I couldn't find her. She was pretty quick and the minute my head was turned, there she went! Once she even turned over a rack. lol! It wasn't too funny at the time!

  6. Happy Birthday!!! Loved those cards--funny and sweet. Know what you mean about hanging on to things just because the giver was special. I still haven't learned to do that yet. Careful of those 30 year old minds. Mine often writes a check my body has trouble cashing.

  12. Happy Birthday, Cheryl! I feel exactly as you do about getting older...there is a young person still living inside of me who isn't ready to be old! HELP! :) You received some great gifts and what an absolutely clever idea that your sweet daughter came up with...very thoughtful and unique AND useful! Do you think our comfort food weather will ever make way for spring? I'd say that chicken dish of yours would be delicious any time! Birthday Hugs, friend!♥

  13. Belated Happy Birthday wishes, Cheryl, and what lovely and original gifts from your daughter! And, how nice that you enjoyed dining out twice for your special day. I smiled when i read about the downsizing and decluttering and how it is getting easier as it's becoming that way for me as well. I spent most of this week sorting through photos and updating albums and found it was so much easier to discard some especially when there was several for the same event. Too bad about the couch, but good that you re-checked it...something better may come along soon.

  14. Happy Birthday, girl! You got some nice, thoughtful gifts! The recipe sounds almost exactly like one my sister-in-law does and I have been meaning to try it. Have most of the ingredients, and may have all...I just cannot remember if I did or did not pick up one item.

I make a similar dish but have never used the sour cream. I will have to try your method next.

Today is our 56th wedding anniversary! How can that possibly be?

  21. Happy Happy Birthday dear friend! I really loved what your son and daughter did for you for your birthday. It souonded like an awesome celebration. You can tell they are very thoughtful children and love you so much. The years do seem to be flying by and your head says you can do something but your body can't.
Sorry, the couch didn't work out. You are getting the spring cleaning bug; I haven't gotten it yet. This is the first week it has felt like spring. I so need to purge our entire home; but it won't happen for a while. I will try to do a few areas at a time. I need to part with some things that were given me too; it's hard.
Have a sweet Week dear girl! Sending loving thoughts your way~

  22. Hi Cheryl~

Happy Birthday!!! What a fun birthday! Your daughter is very clever, what a nice way to say, "I love you"! And a son who knows his mom well enough to get her favorite magazines?! He's a keeper!
Now that I am older . . . I am always happy to celebrate my birthday . . . I made it another year!!

I've never been much of a "keeper". I am sentimental with certain things, but don't like too much clutter around. But, I understand completely about being able to throw things out that were given to me. I still have the memory, I will keep that forever.

I'm trying to remember that spring is today! It's been windy and rainy here, but I will take that over snow. Your recipe sounds delicious. Anything with chicken and stuffing sounds good to me, and it does sound like the perfect rainy day food.

    Have a great week!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  23. Happy Birthday, Cheryl! Growing older is a privilege, even if the darn knees have to get cranky with us...lol Love your sweet gifts and your daughter's creative cards.

I agree that the older we are the less "stuff" we need. It's quite liberating!
