Just In Case

~this photo was taken in December, 2013~

Our dear weatherman is already forecasting ice for our area beginning on Friday.  I hope they are wrong, as they frequently are.  I know it's January and we can expect wintry weather, but ice is something I'm very afraid of since I broke my ankle so severely many years ago after falling on it.

The trees in the photo above are covered in hoarfrost, but it looked icy to me when I was searching for a pic in my folders.  I haven't used my camera much lately.  It's been so bitterly cold that I didn't want to step outside.  A little warming trend ahead of the predicted ice has begun which we are happy to have.

Since it will be warmer for a few days, it is time for me to get out of the house and head to the grocery store to pick up some essentials.  Like bread, it seems like I've run out.  I found that out when I wanted to make myself a sandwich yesterday with the bacon left over from Sunday's breakfast.  And couldn't.  Bummer.

With the bad weather supposedly coming, the stores will be busy the next few days.  Everyone seems to stock up in case we have a blizzard or ice and can't get out for days and days.  My cupboards are pretty well stocked, but I do need a few things such as bread, eggs and fresh produce.  That's one half of my pantry in the photo, they need a good cleaning out.  I'm sure I have a few items that have expired.

I'm hungry for something and I haven't yet decided what that is.  Does that ever happen to you?  It's not something sweet.  Maybe it's just a plain ole cheeseburger.  Yes, that does sound good!  I'm putting hamburger and buns on my list.  What is your must-have food item to have on hand?

Happy Tuesday!
xo Cheryl

  1. Yes, the stores go crazy with bad weather in the forecast. I stocked up last week for a bitterly cold weekend. Not a fan of bitter cold. All night the wind has howled and huffed... a warm southern wind though... bringing promise of 70s this week. I can handle that. That cheeseburger sounds perfect!! blessings ~ tanna

  3. Cheryl, I hate when I don't know what I would love to eat. Of course I could eat spaghetti or meatloaf any time. I pray none of us get ice....it's too destructive. Flooding is another of my dreaded concerns. I am worried for California. So I am praying for anyone in a bad weather situation. I broke my ankle bone and the break spiraled up my leg, running to get in the car for work...it had snowed over ice. Be safe when going out. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  4. I hope that the ice stays away from your area. Our temps dropped below freezing after our recent snowstorm. Black ice has been a concern for the past few days. Luckily I didn't have to get out in it.
I am very familiar with that feeling of not knowing quite what it is I'm hungry for. A cheeseburger sounds like it might be just the thing. I tend to only think of eating them in the summertime.
    Stay safe and stay warm.

  5. I have been up since 6 and still no breakfast. Now you've got me thinking about cheeseburgers at a little after 9 am. Well it's noon somewhere!

Out of bread here, too. Thinking about making a loaf in the bread machine as I don't want to buy any groceries this month. That's right. No grocery shopping this month. It's a great way to save money by staying out of the stores and no watching QVC either.

Hope that you don't get any ice. Say, do you have ice grippers for your boots/shoes? They really do work great.

  6. First of all, that photo at the beginning is absolutely stunning! I have never seen a hoar frost but love to have a photo shoot with one! We are finally going to be warming up today and my snow days will be over...until the next time...IF we get another snow this year. Before our snow hit last week, the stores were a madhouse, as they always are. I made a crockpot full of venison vegetable soup on Friday and it hit the spot perfectly on these freezing cold days...and then on the other hand, made a bowl of snow cream...lol! I know what you mean about wanting something that you can't quite put your finger on...it is usually in the form of some sort of comfort food for me...cabbage rolls, chili, or sometimes it is even some yummy veggies! Stay warm and Happy New Year, Cheryl! ♥

  7. Ooh, sure hope you don't get ice. Besides walking and driving, it scares me on the power lines. Right now we are looking at some really warm days. Maybe window open days?? May your weather man be wrong. My gotta haves are unsweetened Cashew Milk and kale. I can ad-lib if I have those.

  8. Your picture is beyond stunning! Is this near where you live? Do you live in the country? And what were you doing out in that weather? I'm with YOU on ice. It scares me to death. I broke my leg on the ice. I am lucky that I froze some bread, it is still real icy here. What would I HAVE to have? Coffee and eggs! And maybe some cereal, oatmeal and bread. Seems I can't just choose ONE thing. Which is why I'm on a diet!

  9. Yeah I don't DO ice either. Fortunately I live in California, so extreme ice is rare except when we go up to Tahoe, I get scared walking on it. I fell 15mos ago inside my home and did some damage to my arms and my shoulders. Freak accidents can happen on any surface.

  10. That picture is beautiful of the ice even though I know how much trouble such weather can cause. Your pantry looks ready to handle the job should bad weather arrive. STAY warm.

  12. GREAT picture. Everything here is shut down. We had about 8" of snow last night and now we have freezing rain and high winds-with more snow coming on top of it all. Just crazy weather and I am so sick of winter already.

I get really hungry for a good cheeseburger with fried onions every once in a while, too. I would put that on my list!

Hope you have a good night- xo Diana

  13. I love the picture of ice coated trees. I often feel hungry but don't know what I want to eat.

  14. Hi Cheryl,
That is so cute ... you are hungry for something, but not sure what? My son Atticus says that all the time.

  15. We quite often want something but we don't know what...sometimes with me it is a texture. Such as ice cream...or some other dessert that is smooth and creamy. Other times it is something salty and crunchy....but I tell you the truth, there is nothing as good as a good hamburger! With a tomato from the garden.

  16. Oh My---Hope you didn't get that ICE STORM. We had a horrible one 2 years ago .. We lost electricity for about 3 days --but some areas lost theirs for almost 2 weeks... SO devastating... Bless you, my friend.

Yesterday, a grandson and his girlfriend came to visit us... We took them to the state park for lunch... I didn't know what I wanted ---and even though they had a big buffet, I couldn't decide. I finally ordered a Patty Melt and some slaw from the menu---and it was delicious... Hadn't had a Patty Melt in a LONG time... SO--sometimes we all just don't know what we want to eat, do we? ha

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  17. Hi Cheryl!

Ice scares me too! It's really icy here, we had tons of snow, then 40 degrees, melting now freezing. Like you, I am always looking for something different to fix for dinner, and my pantry looks pretty much like yours; a little of this and a little of that.

I love soup, so I always have plenty of ingredients to make a batch of chicken soup or ham and beans. But a good old bowl of tomato soup is always a good thing for me, along with a grilled cheese sandwich. I also like to keep tuna fish, pasta and pasta sauce, tomatoes, and canned fruit. I can make a meal out of canned peaches and toast... ;0)

    Stay warm!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  18. Oh, what wisdom you have in being prepared. I like your list of things to get. I too would want bread, milk and eggs plus some fresh stuff. A good old Cheeseburger would be a must for sure; it sounds so good to me. Hope you do keep warm and cozy during the predicted weather. Here we have weather alert but they usually don't happen or are not as bad s thought. That has been a good thing. Big hugs for you and stay warm!

  19. I have always kept a well-stocked pantry....I use a mark-a-lot pen to mark the expiration day in rather large numbers. That way I don't need to grab my reading glasses, to see the date.
