A little confusion in the garden...

The other day, I looked out a window on the side of the house
where most of the lilac bushes are and couldn't believe my eyes.
One of the lilacs is sporting a few blooms!  Don't they know that
this is fall, not spring?  This is the first time this has happened, and they are not of the repeat blooming variety.  Most of my lilacs are
from starts that I brought from our previous residence.  Anyone else have this happen before?

It seems a lot of my flowers have gotten their second wind, so to speak.  The zinnias have perked up and all of the Knockout Roses are blooming prettily.  The Salvia, Stella D'Oros and others are blooming, too.

The weather is supposed to really cool off by the weekend with night time temps in the 30's, so I know it is almost time to say goodbye to all the lovely flowers.  They made a valiant effort this year, in the unrelenting heat and drought, to provide spots of color and beauty.  As much as I love Fall, I look forward to Spring and to seeing new growth and beautiful new blooms once again.

Until next time...

  1. Yes! I saw a lilac seedling by the east shed blooming a few weeks ago and forgot to get a picture; that is the first time I have ever had a rebloom. I think the plants think it is spring again.

  5. While I'm ready for the cooler temps, I sure hate to see the beautiful blooms go. However, by the Grace of God, we know that we have something Beautiful to look forward to next Spring.
    Love the pics.

  6. they are still beautiful, just extending your summer time a little. we have our night blooming cactus blooming like crazy and it has never bloomed after the first week of Sept. maybe nature is as confused by our weather as we are.

  8. How about that? Your Dear Flowers had a hard season. And now that it's a bit cooler but not cold... They are trying again. How precious!

Please go out and thank them, for their wonderful effort.

My husband is reading a book, concerning scientific proof that plants can.... do more than we think they can. So don't worry, about thanking them. They just might hear you. :-))))

  10. we had this happen 2 years with our ornamental pear tree. it suffered through the summer drought and heat and lost all of its leaves. finally with some fall rain, it put out blooms again so it could re-grow some leaves before winter. :)

  13. I've had lilacs in every house I've owned. Never saw them bloom in the Autumn. Treasure that bush.
    Your pictures are really nice.

  14. Is spring your favorite season? I love fall. I guess this year is confusing to them - hot cold - dry - wet - they are doing whatever they can to keep up.

  15. Hi There, We have a VERY busy weekend since my son is getting married..... Should be TERRIFIC.

Some plants/flowers do that --for who knows what reason. We saw a bloom on one of our Azalea bushes recently... Supposed to bloom in spring. Who knows????

Hope we don't get a frost yet. I want to enjoy our roses longer.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  18. Hi Cheryl!

What a great surprise! I love Lilacs, probably one of my favorite Spring flowers! I think Mother Nature is a little confused too... ;0) I have never seen that happen!

It has been really cold here - 27 this morning, if anything were blooming here, it would be a miracle! Everything looks pretty frozen, and droopy, except the petunias, they will hang on for another week or so.

    Love the butterfly!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  23. Our lantana started blooming again this week, but we got six inches of rain last Saturday/Sunday. Parts of our county got 10, 12, 14, 16 inches! I noticed a beautiful black butterfly on the lantana this afternoon. Our days are in the 80s, nights have been in the 50s but tonight we're predicted in the 40s, so fall has finally arrived here in East Texas. It's about time!

Love the pictures of the butterfly and the zinnias.

  25. The pictures are so beautiful. Actually, we have a Lilac bush that bloomed out of season in late September. It was really an answer to prayer. I do a post on it a while ago. This is the first year we have had our flowers bloom. They have been so pretty. I will try to take picture of the flowers before the cold weather. I too love fall. Today has been lovely.
    Blessings!

  26. Beautiful flowers but the shot with the butterfly is amazing. I can see texture in it. Everytime I try to get that close, they fly away.

  27. Very lovely pics. I'm a spring to summer, fall reminds me of the long, dark winter ugh. I do not mind the colder temps, only the shorter day.

  28. Maybe because of the drought, it's just enjoying a little rain and cooler weather. Heck I don't know. I've got flowers re-blooming now too. It's so nice to see them.

  29. Beautiful, even if they are a tad confused! Maybe it's the late rains.

  30. I love lilacs and always find their blooming season too short. I wonder if the lingering warm temperatures in your area made your plants believe it was spring again? Enjoy them, and their beautiful scent, while you can!

  31. You really make it appear so easy along with your presentation however I to find this matter to be actually something which I feel I would by no means understand. It sort of feels too complex and very extensive for me. I am looking ahead on your next submit, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
