Back to Madison County, IA

As promised in an earlier post, I'll share who the famous star was that was born in Madison County, Iowa.  A few of you guessed John Wayne correctly.  The house above is where he was born in Winterset, Iowa.   These photos are from a series of pics my son took on his iphone while driving through Iowa.

John Wayne was mostly known for the many westerns he starred in.
My hubby is a big fan of westerns.  I usually like them, too, as many of them have gorgeous scenery.

Do you enjoy watching western films and do you have a favorite John Wayne movie?

Until next time...

  1. John Wayne was the love of my best friend's life. She was crazy about him. I'm not sure what she would have done if she ever got to meet him. LOL probably been flabbergasted. I was not a fan of westerns, myself. However, I did enjoy John Wayne playing Rooster in True Grit, the original movie.

  3. I am not sure I have a favorite - I loved most of them. He was such a good, clean man, and always seemed to personify all that was good and right with our country. Nice photos from a phone!

  5. That house is adorable...the offset door and stairs...sweet. It's too small to have held him, though.

The only movie I remember the name of is "True Grit," which I very much enjoyed, though it was a later one...the last one? I did like John Wayne a lot.

  6. I love westerns and love the old west and have read a zillion Western books in my life time. when i was growing up my life ambition was to be a cowboy, NOT a cowgirl. this is news to me where he was born and that his name was not John Wayne.

  7. That little house is quite unique; love that it's front door and porch are actually in a corner of the house. Always loved John Wayne!

  8. We were in Winterset a few years ago. (10? years ago.) We couldn't get over how tiny his birth home was, compared to the big screen star he became. But, back then, most people lived in humble homes and were so grateful to have what they did. There is a wonderful quilt shop in Winterset too: Fons and Porter Quilting.

  11. I'm a Dean Martin fan & he played in Rio Bravo w/ John Wayne, so that's my fave!

I wouldn't mind visiting this place, tho, very interesting... I didn't realize he was born 105 yrs ago... I guess I didn't realize he was that old, even when he was still alive! WoW! =0

  25. Vee directed me over to you blog as she said my barn photos on my post tonight reminded her of yours! :)
I recently passed De Soto, Iowa and saw the sign along I 80 that it was the birthplace of John Wayne! Wish I could have stopped to see the house where he was born -- it was nice seeing it on your post.
