Antiques and a Quiz

Most of the pieces in this old oak-front cabinet used to belong to my grandmother.  There are a few things that are mine such as a cut glass bowl that I bought at an estate sale.

These are pieces that I rarely ever use and I'm beginning to think that all I'm doing is baby-sitting them.  Am I losing my sense of nostalgia?  Maybe.  All I know is that I'm not quite as fond of these things as I once was and am thinking it's time to pass them along
or sell them.

I would keep a few pieces such as the mustache cups and the old soap dish.  When both my children are here next, I will ask them if they want any of the pieces.  The bottom half of the cabinet is also full.

The next step is trying to figure out how to price the pieces and how/where to sell them.  I haven't yet delved into Etsy or eBay to try to learn about selling, so if anyone has a good site for me to learn or tips to share, I'd welcome advice.

Now, speaking of old...

I have a quiz that my daughter shared from FB that I thought was fun.  It's called Take the "OLDER THAN DIRT" Quiz.

Do You Remember?

 1.  BlackJack Chewing Gum
 2.  Wax coke-shaped bottle with colored sugar water
 3.  Butch wax
 4.  Candy Cigarettes
 5.  Soda Pop machines with glass bottles
 6.  Howdy Doody
 7.  Restaurants with tableside JukeBoxes
 8.  Home milk delivery in glass bottles
 9.  Party Telephone Lines
10. NewsReels before the movies
11. 45 RPM records
12. P.F. Flyers
13. Carrying a metal lunchbox
14. Drive-in movie theaters
15. Telephone numbers with word prefix (Olive-6971)
16. The Andy Griffith show
17. Soda Fountains
18. Roller Skate keys
19. S&H green stamps
20. Blue flashbulbs

If you remember 0 to 5  -  You're a WhipperSnapper
If you remember 6 to 15  -  You're getting there
If you remember 16 to 20  -  You're "Older Than Dirt"

How did you score?  I scored 17 and BG scored 18, so that makes us older than dirt, I suppose.  lol!

The sun is shining and everyone is well in my household.  That makes it a great day!  Hope your day is going well, too.

Happy Wednesday to you!
Cheryl

  1. A quiz!

Haha...I remember most of these things. My kids think it's hilarious that we had CANDY cigarettes. ;-)

    1. Do they still make them? They do send the wrong message to kids, so I hope not!

  2. I scored 19 - Don't recall ever seeing newsreels before movies.

  3. I am getting there. Releasing your treasures to a good home is a good idea if the kids don’t want them. All the best with it...

    1. Thanks, Vee. My kids are even less sentimental than I, so I don't think they'll want many pieces.

  4. If you go to "sell" on eBay, and type in what you have to sell, they will give you the average price it is selling for. I do think it is a good idea to let most of these go, as long as you keep some kind of remembrance of her. And yes, I AM old as dirt.

    1. Thanks, Ginny, this is good to know as I have no idea how to price these pieces.

  5. Cheryl- It is just the weirdest thing, isn't it???? I have been going through the same thing for the last two years. Things that I thought I would NEVER part with- I have given to my children, or sold, or just donated. I felt almost guilty sometimes but it has also been freeing. We are preparing to downsize in our move so that has contributed to part of it but also I realize that some things are just THINGS and your memories are separate from them anyway.

I did quite well selling some stuff in an Etsy shop...and also took stuff to a consignment shop. I did do some selling on eBay, too, but liked Etsy better.

Have a wonderful night- xo Diana

    1. I think many of us are thinking alike on this topic of letting things go. I do feel a little guilty too, but I've had these things for so many years and they are just things, as you said. I have many photos, so they won't be forgotten.

  6. I scored a 10, although many things were vaguely familiar, so I think they were part of my older sisters lives as well as my parents.

I've been learning to let go of a lot. I purged a lot of nice things from the lakehouse because I wanted an uncluttered look. I'll have a garage sale this summer. The same here in the city. Someone else will get the please of having something pretty in their homes. But you're right--ask family first.

    1. Jane, I need to have a garage sale too, once I get all my stuff gone through. Which will take all winter. ha! The antique pieces won't be sold on a garage sale, tho.

  7. That shelf full of antiques is beautiful, but I guess there comes a time when we must let go and downsize. I have done a fair bit of that and still have more to sort through.I scored only 6,not because I'm not old, but because I grew up in a rural farming area and lived very sheltered for most of my life.

    1. I'm just so glad I finally got the courage to let go! I've felt guilty about doing so for far too long.

  8. Hi Cheryl!

I scored 20!! I must be wayyyy older than dirt! We have a restaurant in our town that still has tableside jukeboxes, we love them. But, unfortunately, both of the drive-in theaters have closed, and are for sale. So sad!

I love the old antiques that I was given by my mother and grandmother, but, I feel like you...I'm just babysitting them. And, will my children even appreciate them when I'm gone? I do know most of the history behind them, I guess I should write it down, so my kids will understand why I loved them. I don't know anything about pricing such treasures, hopefully your kids will just love them and take them all Home! You really do have quite a collection, and they are all beautiful!!

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb

    1. There's a little restaurant in Branson that has the 50's theme and has tableside jukeboxes. I love to go in there just to listen to the music! Their burgers are good, too!

  10. I'm "getting there" at 11. That was fun . . . a little trip down Memory Lane. I had forgotten about candy cigarettes (although I wasn't allowed to have them). :)

  11. Well, I guess I am really older than dirt because I scored a 20! It's fun though to think about some of those things from the past.

You have some beautiful glassware that looks a lot like mine. Mine came from my grandmother and mother and fill my grandmother's antique china cabinet that I now own. I love them but often wonder if my kids will care about inheriting them. It seems like things I loved growing up that meant so much to me because they had been passed down just don't mean as much to my grown children. Is it just me or do the current younger generations just not care about family history and the family things that have been held on to and passed down for many generations?

    1. I think you're right, Bonnie. I don't think the younger generation have the sentimental bent that we older ones do. And perhaps antiques aren't their "thing" or fits into their decor.

  12. most definite older than dirt, only 3 of the list i remember... over the past 12 years, since i retired, i have given, donated, sold almost everything in the house that has no use. dust catchers i mean. i do keep the what if i need rope or string or rubber bands. i have 6 antique bowls in the kitchen cabinet and 5 oil lamps. they may go soon. i am thinking of going to everything i own would fit in a tiny house. LOL... mainly because the older i get the more i hate dusting. also my taste have changed, décor wise i mean.

    1. The cleaning/dusting is one reason I'm ready to give up these dishes. You can probably tell they are dusty in the photo above. I used to regularly take them all out of the cabinet and wash them by hand until they sparkled. They need it now, but my priorities have changed. lol!

  13. I scored a perfect 20--yep older than dirt. I too have lost interest in heirlooms Mine are mostly boxed up these days giving no one pleasure. Time for an unveiling and selling me thinks.

    1. My interest has severely waned in the last few years. Maybe it's getting older or I'm just not that sentimental any longer. The guilt I used to feel is fading away...that helps.

  14. I knew quite a few, but not all. I know the feeling about the dishes. I have lots of old dishes, cut glass, etc. And hunting for them at auctions used to be something I really enjoyed. Now I too just see them as something to dust. My daughter, and daughter-in-law aren't interested in them at all, so why do I keep them? Like you, I think I'll keep a piece or two just for sentimental reasons and give the rest away. Sadly some of the stuff I paid decent money for I doubt I could get a $1 for. These youngs kids could care less about that kind of stuff. Same thing with solid wood furniture. Everybody just wants to paint it all white!! My great aunt would roll over in her grave LOL. Blessings to you sweet friend.

    1. By the time I get rid of all my cut glass, pressed glass, Depression glass items they will probably be in vogue again. :) Oh well, I am just tired of them so I guess it doesn't matter. Remember when antique oak furniture was all the rage? I don't know that it is so much any longer, but they still ask good prices at the antique malls.

  15. I scored 13; but I didn't need the test to know I am older than dirt!

  16. Your antiques are quite beautiful...I have a hard time getting rid of things like this, especially if they belonged to my mom. Even though we are planning to relocate to TN, I have already imagined many of these items and how I will display them in the new farmhouse. I know I need to get rid of some of them and I really don't think I'll have a problem thinning them out. I saw that quiz on Facebook and I can remember them all...I still DVR Andy Griffith!

    1. These were all in a beautiful old china cabinet in my grandmother's house and I remember them from my childhood. That's a long time to look at them but it's time for a change, I think. Heck, I could change my mind before it's all over. :)

  17. As one antique owner to another, yours are so lovely, Cheryl, I have also been thinking along the lines of offering our children any old stuff they want. what's so funny is I still love to visit antique shops, and usually bring home a trinket, ~go figure, I guess old habits die hard~.
I scored pretty high on the test, I guess I am older than dirt too! I did enjoy reminiscing over the list!
I am so glad your family is healthy, this flue season is really bad around the country,

  18. I'm older than dirt :) I have finally let go of some family things that I have held onto for years and not one else in the family wanted. It didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought it would. xo Laura

  19. This was a fun quiz, Cheryl, and I scored in the “getting there” range. It’s hard to get rid of family treasures, but then there comes a time when we all realize it’s easier than we thought.

  20. O have a China cabinet full of stuff similar to yours. I have a number of tea cups collected by my mother and grandmother. I do want them to go to children. However, I don't know if they will appreciate them like I do. I need to start de-junking for sure. I have way too much unused stuff.
I loved yoru quiz and I am really "Older Than Dirt". I got them all.
Warm thoughts and hugs for you!

  22. 17. Dirt with you and BG. LOL! And, have you found that your children don't really care to have our "memory pieces"? I'm getting ready to part with some old "treasures" too. I think it's getting time to travel lighter. ;) blessings ~ tanna

    You have some beautiful treasures.
    I enjoyed the quiz. ;-)

  26. I had a lot of my mother's old 'collections' --but all they did was gather dirt.. SO--I kept a few really special ones and got rid of the others... Nothing was valuable --other than the sentiment... I do wish now that I had have kept more of my parent's stuff than I have through the years.. Seems to mean more to me as I get older.

I definitely am Older than Dirt.... Got about 17 I think..... Never heard of Wax coke-shaped bottle with colored sugar water

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  27. I must be even older than I thought. I could have sworn I commented on this post as it hit home with my stage of life now. Oh well, I guess not :/.
It is hard to part with treasures we have kept for so long.
