Beetles and Etc.

This is turning into a busy week.  Another trip to the Big Town was taken yesterday to the computer repair shop.  Hopefully a new monitor will arrive in a couple of days.

While in town, I did some birthday shopping for our son and found myself a new summery purse which I really needed.  Shopping for men and for purses are probably high on my list of things I least like to shop for.

What do you get a man who has what they need and the things they might want just doesn't fit your pocketbook?  lol!

As for looking for a purse for myself, it's easier to shop for my daughter.  She's easier to please than I am.  I find that most purses are either too big, too small, or the wrong color.

Thanks to all of you who shared advice for hiding the cords hanging from our new wall-hung flat screen tv.  I went with Cheryl's, of Thinking About Home, advice to look at the link she gave me about the kit pictured above which I found yesterday at Home Depot.  Hopefully we'll be able to get it installed easily and soon.

Those nasty things above that are eating up our peaches on our trees and on the knockout roses are called Japanese beetles.  They are a menace.  I found some information online here that hopefully will help to get rid of them.

They say the best method is handpicking and dropping them in a bucket of soapy water.  Ugh.  A comment from someone said they sprayed hydrogen peroxide on them and they fell dead to the ground.  I tried that a couple of times and nothing happened.  Maybe they used a stronger grade.  The next thing we'll try is spraying them with soapy water.  If you know a good way to get rid of these critters, please let me know.

Our weather has been delightful the past few days.  Our neighbor just down the road came the other day and mowed our pasture.  He gets the hay bales which don't amount to a lot and you can see one of them in the above photo.  Such a nice guy and we don't even ask him to do it, but we really appreciate that he shows up every year with his tractor and equipment.

Okay, back to doing the laundry.

Happy Tuesday to you!
xo Cheryl

  1. Laundry for me, as well! I don't have any good suggestions for the beetles. They are a true problem.

  2. Cheryl is a smart gal! That's just the thing! Specificity is so important.

Well boo hiss on the Japanese beetles. I know they say the beetle traps just attract them, but they are already there anyway so what's the point of that argument? In the past, I have hand picked them into soapy water. Disgusting! I may pick up some traps this year. Diatomaceous earth (edible) works well, but in this soggy year, there'd be lots of reapplying. I'm not above going for the heavy-duty stuff, if I have to. I'd be most upset with them eating the peaches.

Hope that you came up with something good for your son! Baked goods make a boy happy.

  3. I hope this doesn't mean that we are going to have more of them...their numbers have really dwindled here the past few years. (the beetles, I mean)

  5. We bought the beetle bag trap at westlakes. Had almost 1/2 gallon of them in 2 1/2 hours.

  6. Japanese beetles are awful!! We learned about them in my Master Garden class. Many people spoke about natural ways to get rid of them, but none felt they worked well.
My menace is the earwig. An awful, awful, awful bug too!
Good Luck and keep us posted.

  7. Your purple flowers are beautiful! Petunias? You must live in a beautiful area. I just got a Vera Bradly purse at Goodwill today, $4.00! I buy most of my purses at Goodwill. Your cone flowers are beautiful and vibrant! Surely there's something else to be done about the beetles, how frustrating.

  9. I despise anything with a hard shell...even ladybugs. I hope you find a solution. Do they respond to the good 'ol beer in shallow dish?

  11. Good luck with those beetles. They really are nasty looking. You really have a good deal with your neighbor. You get a mowed pasture and he gets needed hay. Love it when folks work together.

  12. You know, I never even knew what a Japanese beetle was until we moved to KY and they were everywhere. We have been bothered with them here in NC for many years but now that I think about it, not so much the past few years...they really do have seemed to be dwindling. They are disgusting and I do hope you find a cure for them soon. Coneflowers are one of my most favorite perennials and they attract such lovely butterflies!
