Dreaming of Spring

Oh, February...slow down, you're moving along too fast!  Or if you're ready for spring and watching the flowers coming up and the redbuds blooming, then it may not be moving along fast enough!

Our weekend was spent cleaning in the basement.  The men coming this week to change our telephone/internet/cable plan need access to our televisions and computer.  I didn't think the cleaning would be a 2 day job, but I am thorough when I clean, so in spite of it looking quite a bit rugged down there while it awaits a renovation...new water lines, sheetrock and then the painting before carpet is laid...it is now somewhat presentable.

The hubby and I didn't do much for Valentine's Day except grab a bite to eat.  We both were hungry for loaded nachos.  They were very yummy!  I added some sour cream on top of mine
but BG prefers to add extra salsa.

I didn't get the dessert made over the weekend that I had planned because I was so busy downstairs.  But I did bake some blueberry muffins this morning.  This recipe came from Estelle's and oh my goodness...are they ever tasty!  If you like blueberry muffins, you will want to try this recipe!

Do you ever get a craving for something special to eat?  I've been on an orange eating kick lately.  Maybe it's my body telling me I need the extra Vitamin C.  Sometimes you can buy a bag of oranges and they aren't so good, but the ones I've gotten lately are very good.

I have an appointment in a couple of days to get some new glasses.  Can't wait.  I'm not sure that I want contacts after all.  After getting a glimpse of my aging face this morning without my glasses on, I've decided that maybe they (the glasses) help camouflage the bags under my eyes a wee bit.  Well, that's what I tell myself, okay?  lol!  I can't wait to see what kind of glasses are available now.  It's been quite a few years since I've had a new pair.

We had a little bit of snow on the ground when we woke up yesterday.  Today I woke up to frost and fog.  Then I saw some snow flakes falling again.  And later when I took out some bird seed to the feeders I felt some sprinkles.  Crazy weather!  It's supposed to warm up through the week with temps around the mid-60's Friday.  That will put me in the mood for spring!

We've not had a bad winter so far, so I can't really complain.  BG and I were watching one of the outside feral cats running across our pond yesterday morning.  BG remarked on the fact that the pond doesn't freeze solid enough to hold a person's weight as often as it used to.   We are afraid when the temps warm up later this week and the ice begins to melt, the kitties might fall through.

I remember winters when I was a youngster and it seemed like the ponds on the farm almost always had ice thick enough for me to ice skate on.  My dad always tested the ice before he would let us on it, of course.  Almost every morning during the winter months, he had to chop holes in the ice for the livestock to drink from and he could tell by the thickness of the ice if it was safe.  And he also would walk out and jump on the ice a few times to see if it would crack.

How's the winter been in your area so far?  Stay warm and stay well!  I'm going to get back to work on that paperwork that needs to be filed or shredded.  And dream of spring!

xo Cheryl

  1. We had sleet, freezing rain, and snow today with lots of rain for tomorrow! So you can imagine how I am longing for spring!
Yum! your blueberry muffins look so delicious, Estelle has some of the best recipes!

OH Cheryl! I could have written your last post on bibs and blobs! I have been trying to purge and de-clutter, it is especially hard for me to do away with the magazines, and whatnots I have collected, but always seem to throw them in the trash with one eye closed!~smile~
I indeed think the word is out about all the goodies being served at you home!~wink~

Since i am very seldom on the computer, i have a lot of catching up to do, your post on age spoke so much to me, and could have written it too Thank you for sharing!

  3. I am yearning for spring right along with you. We've had a mixed bag of weather today. I've spent too much of the day under a blanket counting birds and reading. I'm counting on a burst of energy when the spring breezes start to blow.
    Your muffins look yummy.

  4. Cheryl, I can relate to so much of what you said in your post! First of all, the photo of the redbuds about took my breath away...they are THE thing I look forward to the most in the spring. I could almost reach in through the screen and eat those blueberries alone...and then I saw the muffins...YES PLEASE! I feel the same way you do about glasses. I have worn them all of life but quite a few years ago, I tried out contacts...couldn't get used to how I looked without glasses, plus, it turns out I couldn't wear them after a while...I would blink and they would POP out of my eyes due to my crazy astigmatism! I like my glasses for the same reason you like yours...they hide wrinkles! We have also been having crazy weather...sounds like it's about like yours. Have a good week!

  9. Oh I know what you mean about glasses being a fashion statement and the best makeup...I feel the same way about mine.

Loaded tacos sound so good. We had some last week. I could probably eat them more than once a week.

Winter has been mild as winters go. It has been -20°F for a couple of days, but the weather is shifting again to warmer temps. I will not be unhappy to see it go.

  11. Hi Cheryl~

I am very ready for Spring! We have had a snowy winter, at least more snow than last year. I has been warm the last few days, but somewhat windy, that always means warm air is on the way. It also means work, our yard is covered with pine-cones and twigs from the trees!

I know what you mean about glasses, I have a love, hate relationship with mine . . . so does my eye doctor! I have been trying to get used to contacts, but it's not easy. Hopefully, he will find the right prescription for me and I will be able to see again, it's been a long two weeks with contacts!

I love the memories of your father and the pond, those are the things that keep them close to us, I love that. I'm glad you never fell through!

Sounds like you have some work ahead of you with your basement. We did some remodeling on ours a few years ago and it sure did make a difference on how much we used it. I only went downstairs to do laundry, now that we have a nice family room downstairs, we use it all the time. Good luck with your re-do!

Nachos sounds yummy! My Doc has me on a low carb diet so no nachos for me . . . :0(

    Hugs,
    Barb

  12. This year I cannot wait for winter to end. I want to feel the warmth of the sun on my face. I just hate the cold more as I get older. I love blueberry muffins and may have to fix me some after seeing yours.

  14. Your posts are so chock full of life and we are so many times doing the same things. Our basement is a mess. I wish I could get hubby motivated to tackle it but it's just looming.

I feel scared about the little kitties on ice..on our lake I always fret about ice fisherman and when we let our dogs run loose, back in the day when we really froze over, it was okay. Not now, we rarely freeze completely over so I keep them tethered in the winter.

February is going slow for me. I'm am usually never anxious for days to pass but I'm missing good fresh air over 12 degrees! :)

  15. Our weather has been a mixed bag like yours has! I admit that I have turned the corner and am now thinking about spring.

It seems that there are always projects to keep us going, doesn't it? Usually I can't get ahead of them! Hope your little colony of kitties keep away from the melting pond!!

I keep meaning to try those muffins! Vee recommended them, and now you too! They really do look yummy.

  16. I have never seen a frozen pond, and would never jump on one. ha ha... i did see ice on a bird bath a couple of times. i do love to see red buds bloom, they are so beautiful... i laughed at your comment about bags under the eyes and you are correct. a few weeks ago, i noticed someone my age that had really big bags. i said to bob, i don't have bags like that. i went in the bathroom to look in the mirro and sure enough i did not. UNTIL I took off my glasses and there they were, really big bags. glasses do hide a lot, even my sagging lids look better behind glasses. but if i could see without them i would not mind the bags. i asked my eye doc if he could fix my eyes so i did not have to wear glasses. he said no because your eyes are age related and nothing can be done

  17. Other than the 11 in. snow in Dec., we've had a great winter...been having really nice days with just a bit of wind...I sure am ready for summer, tho....and Blueberry muffins...;)

  18. I like glasses for the reasons you mentioned. They do disguise a flaw or two.
We have had a blustery, cold/warm virtually snowless winter. I may have stopped too quickly on my move north 10 years ago. I do love snow and we don't get much even during a good winter. The plus side is that we haven't had an ice storm or lost power. Guess that is a decent trade off.
Hope those kitties stay on top of the ice.

  19. Hi Cheryl

I know your dilemma about glasses! Now that I have "new eyes" after surgery I can see without glasses for the first time since I was 5 years old. My vision was around 20/30 the last doctor visit. I can read well with good light but I may invest in a good pair of reading glasses and leave the top part clear glass.

Our snow has all melted and we had some really nice weather lately. I know winter will return but it has been a wonderful break.

  20. Your weather sounds pretty much like ours, Cheryl. I am really looking forward to temps in the 60s this weekend. I am going to get out and enjoy every minute of it. xo Laura

  21. Our winter has been the same as your winter... :) We are looking forward to the warm up!

  22. Hahaha. I hear you on the glasses. They do cover a multitude of sins.

  23. Hi, I never wore glasses full-time until about a year ago... Had only needed them for reading before... BUT--once I learned to wear the fulltime, I feel almost naked without them on.... I've never thought about contacts ---so guess I'll just keep the glasses.

Our winter has been fairly mild overall --although we've had a little snow this year (as opposed to all of the ICE we had last year). That is a GOOD thing.

    Don't work too hard!!!

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  24. I couldn't wear contacts because my eyes already itch and burn and I rub them a lot. So, no contacts for me. As for winter, we have had a crazy winter...supposed to be in the 60's the next couple of days...was in the 40's today.

  25. You are one busy lady😊 Yes this winter weather has been different. We broke snow records, then tomorrow it's to be in the low 60's! Crazy! We use to skate too. Those were fun times !!

    Blessings

  26. Yup, I am ready for Spring. We had a few days where it warmed up a bit but today we had wind, hail, snow and sleet. It was very cold when we were out and about.
I do believe that glasses cover up the bags and wrinkles a little bit more at this age. I wore contacts for a while but then realized glasses really did look better. Gosh, it isn't fun counting those wrinkles.
I so need to clean our basement and do some purging but I am waiting for that spring cleaning bug to hit.
Those blue berry muffins looks so good.
Loved reading this one; have a blessed week! Hugs~
