Checking In

I finally went to the doctor for help today.  No, a medical doctor...not a shrink.  Today is day 10 of the virus from hell.  Come to think of it, maybe I could use a shrink to tell me why I always wait so long before going to a doctor.

I've tried various things to try to knock out this crud, but it is tougher than any home remedies one might try.

Laughter is the best medicine they say, so I've tried to laugh but I keep getting choked on the mucous sliding down the back of my throat.  So trying to laugh is out.  Grumbling is in.  I can do that very well even if my voice does sound funny!

I started out by drinking pineapple juice the first few days. I've read that PJ will knock out all the ills that may befall you.  Well, not exactly.  But it is supposed to ward off bad germs.  Nope!  Couldn't prove it by me.  However, it did taste pretty good and I would close my eyes and pretend that I was sitting on a beach in Hawaii and was sipping my PJ out of an actual pineapple.  Until my nose started running like Niagara Falls and I had to grab the Kleenex which ended that nice day dream.  Dare I mention that I was also pretending that I was 30 again and wearing some snazzy swimwear and Don Ho was still around and serenading me?  And what would BG say to that?  Oh, he was too busy gawking at the hula dancers swaying their hips in those grass skirts.  Hmmm, maybe my fever has risen again.

I'm sitting here in my jammies with a sweatshirt for warmth.  I vascillate between being hot and chilling.  When I'm chilling I just turn on the laptop and put it on my legs for warmth.  I then usually fall asleep for awhile.  Until the laptop slides off my lap onto the floor with a thud.  I can actually hear the thud even though I can hear very little else.  My ears are so stopped up and I have an infection in my right ear, the doctor tells me.

Stormy has been by my side throughout this whole ordeal.  She sleeps by me, when I'm in the recliner she's on the floor beside my chair and sometimes in my arms.  When I go to the bathroom, I'll open the door to find her by the door waiting for me.  If only I could train her to fetch cold drinks for me to sip on!

Did the scales at the clinic show a weight loss?  Hahahaha!!  I guess when you sip Pepsi or iced tea (sweetened, of course) all day but not eat a lot, you still consume more calories than you think.  And the only exercise I get is hurrying to the bathroom.  You know what happens when you are my age and you cough a lot?  You younger gals will find out soon enough.  I won't spoil your fun now.

What else is happening?  Well, I did read an interesting tidbit in the news today.   Seems the oldest woman in the world, age 116, eats bacon every single day.  She has a sign in her kitchen that says "Bacon makes everything better."  Woman after my own heart!  You can read about her here.

I will be back as soon as the meds kick in and kick this virus to the curb!

Take care and stay well!

xo Cheryl

  3. Sorry you've had such a time with the virus and hopefully you'll be on the mend very soon. It's not fun when you try everything at home and still suffer. Take care and maybe eat a little bacon. :)

  4. A lot can be learned from a 116 year old woman...she must just be a treasure trove of knowledge after living that long! I must agree with her bacon statement :) It sounds like you have really had it bad. You are like me, not going to the doctor unless you MUST...and sometimes not even then! Well, I certainly hope you feel better soon, Cheryl!

  6. Cheryl, I am so mad, I have probably shortened my life by not eating bacon. Next we will find out chocolate is a cure all. LOL. Well now I am dreaming. I sure hope you get well soon...sounds awful , what you have . Being sick is no fun for anyone. Some times going to the doctor's is often followed by more visits...that is usually why I wait so long to go. :) Blessings to you and wishes for good health, xoxo,Susie

  7. Oh dear Cheryl.....so sorry for your sickness. Grandson #1 has the crud and we were just sitting here trying to decide if he needs to go to the Dr. or not. I think I'll encourage him to go on! Hope you feel better SOON and that all of that mucous dries itself up. Prayers for you sweet lady!

  8. I never go to the doctor. Honestly, I hardly ever get sick. But this morning I broke down and went to urgent care. Sinus infection. I've been sick for a week and every night I went to bed and told myself "tomorrow I will feel better." And every day I got worse. And I'm flying to California on Saturday to see my daughter and I just CAN'T be sick when I'm there. So . . . . . I just swallowed 9 pills (steroid pak, zpak, and OTC Claritin). I should be well by noon :). Hope we BOTH feel better soon! Blessings!

  9. OMGOSH,. Cheryl! How awful that you have that crud. There is so much crap going around right now. I had two girls here for three days-they went back to school today and Thing Three is now down for the count. I hope you feel better soon and that they gave you something to help with your ears, etc.
Hope your weekend is a good one and that you are much better by then. xo Diana

  12. Aww bummer. That is a long time to be beyond puny. Good thing BG could at least tend to your needs and you both didn't get sick.
Animals know don't they? They just know when to give quiet comfort.
Hope you are A-OK soon. Enough is enough.

  13. Oh you poor gal! Hope that you are feeling much better. I don't go to doctors either, if I can help it. And so I grinned to read your pineapple juice story because I drink it every morning with fresh ginger squeezed in and fresh lemon juice. I really look forward to it and, crazy thing, I think it is helping.

  17. Hi Cheryl!

Well, this virus is just bringing out the comedian in you . . . you are pretty dang funny sweet friend! I hope that the Dr. gave you something wonderful to make you feel better, I've talked to lots of people who have had this nasty bug, and it's BAD! Hang in there, and keep us posted in that Hawaiian adventure!!

  18. I had many chuckles over your post. But all funniness aside, I hope you're getting better. Whatever bug you have doesn't sound like fun.

  19. So sorry to hear you're sick - yuck! At least you have a sense of humor about it though. Kick that nasty Pepsi and sweetened tea to the curb though and stick with water and unsweetened herbal teas! Hope you are feeling better soon.

  21. A little late with catching up on blog readinh, Cheryl, and even though you were feeling poorly, you apparently did not lose your sense of sumor. I smiled reading about your daydreaming about being on a beach in Hawaii.

  22. Oh my dear friend, I am so sorry you have been so sick. It sounds like the flu almost more than a cold. The antibiotics should get you up and about soon.
I loved your daydreaming of being on the beach in Hawaii; way fun.
I am glad you have Stormy to snuggle up too.
You will be in my prayers dear friend. Blessings and hugs for you~
