Random 5 Friday

It's time for Random 5 Friday!

 Fly me to the moon
And let me play among
 the stars
Let me see what
spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars

1.  Anyone remember that old song by Frank Sinatra?  This song started playing in my head immediately when I found this photo in my archives last night.  One thing is certain, I could care less about seeing what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars.  I wanna see what spring is like here.  Right. Now.  Those of you who like the snow and cold are welcome to it!   Okay, that's all I'll say about that for now.  And, I will NOT be showing any snow scenes today. It's been too cold to go out and take photos.

2.  Yes, Mr. Cardinal, that is duct tape holding your feeder together.  Did you know that duct tape has many, many uses?  I even remember a decorator on TV years ago, Christopher Lowell, telling about covering chair cushions with fabric and using duct tape to hold it together on the bottom side.  No sewing was involved.

3.  I have been looking at some flower garden magazines.  I'm trying to think what to plant along the front of our house where the foundation work was done.  I don't think BG will go for my planting anything with much of a root system.  Our red brick house faces west.  Any suggestions?

4.  I hate the color gray or grey...however you like to spell it.  It is a depressing color, to me.  But I know many love it.  I like silver, as in jewelry or cars, but you will not find gray in my house or in my wardrobe, other than in a pair of sweatpants.  I know it is one of the top 10 colors for spring, according to Pantone.  After years of living with first harvest gold & avocado green, then earth tones, to country blue and mauve, I finally said the heck with what they say is popular and not let them influence my color choices.  Do you let designers influence your color palette when it comes to decorating or choosing your wardrobe?

5.  There are a lot of good movies that I've watched more than once.  I'm in the mood for a good movie this weekend, but I want to watch something I've not seen before.  Anything you care to recommend?

I hope you have a wonderful Friday!

Until next time...

  1. Well, heavens! :):) I certainly got the hint that you were sick and tired of the cold and snow. I don't blame you. As beautiful as it is, and I DO love snow..I would not like to live in the kind of icy cold they have been speaking of on the news.

Lets see. Yes..I do have a book that I thoroughly enjoyed. "WE TWO" about Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. I was fascinated and have read it twice. I just may do it again. I will read a really good book more than once and I love the ones taken from history and diaries. Historical novels. I had seen the movie "Sense and Sensibility" and loved it. Then ran across the book, brand new, at a garage sale a couple of week ago. It's in the Queen's english, but as soon as you get used to it..makes it fascinating. I am in the midst of reading it now.
About decorating with color. I imagine that I do pay attention to trends..or did. However..not so much any more. I love my moss green carpet..and pale gold walls and white trim and deep red walls in my kitchen and office. Greens in our bedroom along with pink and pale greens in my bathroom White floors. Brick red tile floors in the kitchen. Trend will not change my colors. I love all colors..but I don't use blue except in accents..such as dishes..a vase...that sort of thing. I love sea foam green as they call it..and robin's egg blue, but I won't paint a room that color. As a matter of fact, I am going to use wall paper as soon as I can. I am going to paper the hallway..ASAP. I don't care if it's the style or not.

The one big change, for me, that I made, was I suddenly loved black accents. Not much..but some. I think it's beautiful and goes with every style of furniture..except, of course, Shabby Chic. :)
Lets see, did I cover it all? I LOVED this post. HOW I wish we had Cardinals. They are such beautful birds.
Here's sending you Springtime thoughts! *sigh* I wish I could help!
    Love,
    Mona

  6. Wow - that photo of the moon is amazing! I love grey and gray, but can only wear the darkest charcoal gray, anything lighter washes me out, and I'll have people telling me I don't look well all day long - sigh. I love the thought of planning flower gardens in this snowy weather!

"blue eyes" they call him. he is freakin' great!!! ) In other words, hold my hand In other words, baby, kiss me Fill my heart with song And let me sing for ever more You are all I long for All I worship and adore In other words, please be true In other words, I love you ... 12. Grey paired with certain colors is very stunning. Even different shades of gray make a big difference. My daughter always insisted on buying that light gray that looks horrible on everyone until one day I took pictures of her with that color on and then ones with a beautiful blue that complemented her eyes. I told her I refused to buy her anything else that color gray.

  13. Fly me to the moon -- Frank Sinatra -- swoon!!!!! I think everyone is tired of winter -- bring on spring. I look horrible in gray -- to heck with the *decorators*! I remember Christopher Lowell ... I tried to catch each and every show. Happy Friday!

  14. Ahhh, but I hear it with Tom Jones' voice... LOL! Oh, what a crush I had on him as a girl! LOL! I do like gray... didn't used to, but I do now. I think my own "grayness" in life brought that about. LOL! I think you HAVE to surround yourself with the things you love... for me, most would not think they "went together" but, it's my space. ;)

  15. Cheryl,

I am ready for spring also. The last time we saw temps above zero was last Sunday. We are thankful we have not had wind with this cold snap. Starting Monday it sounds like each day will be nicer and nicer.

In general am not a big grey color fan. I do love grey hooded sweat shirts. Live you, I prefer silver. I pay no attention to fashion or decorating trends.

Hope you find a good movie to watch and have a wonderful weekend.

  16. poor you, i hope that cold leaves soon.
i have 4 chairs and 2 bar stools that i covered about 6 years ago and the duct tape is what i used and it is still working..
what influences me for colors is what ever was in the house when we bought it. as in we still have the green and the gold i our bathrooms from the sixties and our counter tops are gray. it was here when we bought the house and will be when we leave the house.

  17. OK, now Fly Me to the Moon is paling in my head. I have lots of duct tape in my art room. It comes in so many colorful designs now. There's no gray in my house either but when I look outside the sky is gray most of the time. Hardly ever see the sun.

  18. yes, i remember that song and LOVE that shot, too. also smiled at the cardinal checking out your handiwork. :)

i love the colors of gray/grey. soft, soothing browns and grays of winter. i know. you get white.

i watched a movie this week that i'd had on dvr for some time and finally got to it. i enjoyed it as it was a different vehicle for george clooney. 'the descendants'

  19. Am I catching your drift? You're ready for spring? ;)

Since my house is rooted in colonial/primitive decor, the new grey and yellow and aqua just don't fit. I am hopelessly outdated, but I stick with what I love. I am slightly more influenced by clothing trends, especially in the area of color.

We recently watched a movie that had a big impact on me, but don't watch it if you're in the mood for something fun or light. In fact, this one was quite dark and depressing and heartbreaking. The movie was "Wit", about an English professor who learns she has stage 3 ovarian cancer and her journey through experimental treatments. We watched it last weekend and I have thought about it every day since. There is much to ponder... BUT, like I said, don't watch it unless you're wanting to cry and be moved and consider.

On a (much) lighter note...gotta love duct tape! :D

    Enjoy your weekend, Cheryl!

  20. No, don't let what others say influence what I like...though sometimes what they like coincides with what I like...LOL I do like gray, for quilts as a background color but that is about it. I don't even want it for a car, though at one time I Loved charcoal gray for trucks!

As for movies; Gifted Hands: The story of Ben Carson, Seabiscuit--I cried when I watched it aned cried when I read the book....The Last Bricklayer in America...they are all old but really liked them.

  21. Good Morning, Frank Sinatra music, memories of the goodies but oldest. The Rat Pack movies. I love the old movies whether John Wayne or who I don't care. They are so much better then some that we have today. Your cardinals make me think about watching them to steal the dog's food while I stayed with the boys yesterday. Duct tape comes in so many designs now that you could decorate just about anything with it. I wear whatever I want because I don't care for some of the fashion. Now you know my age. A foot of snow and cold so ready for spring, but have to get through February first. Take care and have a great weekend. Hugs and Prayers from Your NW Missouri Friend.

  28. Lovely photos!
I do like a soft gray. Maybe not for walls but for clothes is good. I tried many years ago to do what was in style, but now I'm over 50 and I just dress to please myself. :-D
You have a great weekend too.

  29. Come down to East Texas and vacation with me....It's cold here today, but who knows what tomorrow may bring. It was in the mid-seventy's last week. We have had some snowflakes today, but nothing that would ever think of sticking...I would love to see the white stuff, but I'd be just as happy to see flowers too...
    Y'all snuggle up....stay warm...

  31. Rose, I am a new visitor. What a darling blog you have. I love your fur babies. Sadly I am allergic to cats but I love to visit them (my daughter has two). Frank Sinatra is so dreamy! It is very nice to meet you. I am following your blog. :-)

  32. I don't care for gray either. I'm sick of winter. Zinnias can withstand quite a bit of heat, and they're annuals, so the roots shouldn't run that deep.

  33. Looks like that little cardinal is really checking you out. And yes, I do remember that song. Now it's in my head like a worm!!

  34. I don't blame you regarding the snow. I can't wait to see what your garden will look like come Spring/Summer! I do know that song! ;) Grey? Gray? I do have some grey in my home but to tell you the truth, I don't care for it too much! I stopped listening to what's in style at the moment because I know what I like and I know what I don't. ;) xoxo Jen

  35. I lived on the prairies for thirty years so I am well aquainted with cold and snow. Some years it got to me others I just shrugged it off. I don't know what made the difference.
We've moved houses several times and decorated to appeal to purchasers. I've just moved again but this house is for keeps, the colours will be all about me and not the least bit on trend.

  36. Lovely pictures !
    Mr. Cardinal so handsome ;)
    Greetings :)

  37. I love that song by Frank Sinatra.
I too am ready for spring. We are still having a lot of rain here which we need; but at least no snow at this point of time.
I certainly don't follow fashion trends colors; or home colors. I really like mauve and blue for sure. We have a lot of mauve in our house. I would love to change our kitchen to blue and white; but I don't think that will happen. I can live with it the way it is.
I need to plan our flowers out a little better this year.
I love duct tape it is so much a need in every home. I use it a lot.
Have a great week and many blessings for you!
