My Friday Favorite...and a question

This tole-painted old bread box is a favorite that I've had for many, many years.  I love chickens and roosters and it fit into my kitchen color scheme back then when I was into my earth-tones phase.  Then, when I went through my country blue and mauve phase, it just didn't fit in so I put it in the closet where it made a good storage box for old letters and cards that I wanted to save.  A few years ago, I we painted our kitchen Barn Red and I thought it was time to bring out the bread box again.  It got a few dings and dents along the way, but I think it's held up fairly well for an oldie.  Kinda like it's owner.

Speaking of bread, I have a question.  Do you use a bread machine?  If so, would you happen to know anything about a Magic Chef machine?  I found one at a flea market the other day and it looked to be in perfect condition and the asking price was just under 20 dollars.  I really don't have room for one, but I've always wanted a bread machine as I never got the hang of making it the old-fashioned way.  If you think this is a good deal, let me know!  Of course, I realize it may not still be there when and if I go back to get it.

Enjoy your day and have a happy weekend!

Until next time...

Bread Machine question... I don't know about bread machines. My husband has one and uses it, but I don't know what make it is.

"Dings and dents" make sure that your Little Red Hen box, is a true ANTIQUE. No matter when it was purchased. :-)

  5. I would think this bread box would be quite valuable in time. We used to have one similar when I was growing up. Everyone had one back then, maybe because they did not build enough food storage in old kitchens? I want a bread machine, too!! And I, too, don't have enough room either!!

I used to have a bread machine and loved it. Wonder if I still have it somewhere? Can't remember what I paid for it.

  13. Cheryl, the old bread box is wonderful vintage and like us only gets better with age.
About the bread machine...I don't know anything about Magic Chef or this particular unit and its features, but in my opinion the price is a bit high. Two years ago, I bought a Welbilt bread unit at a local thrift store, It was very clean and had the manual as well and was $5. I later learned that this is more of a basic unit, but it works well. Last week I found another Welbilt unit at the same thrift store and this one was $10 less a 10% discount for seniors day (yeah). It was fairly clean, but had no guide and I was able to download a PDF from the internet. Welbilt was one of the first companies to make bread machines and sadly is out of business. But both machines are working and we have used the new one several times already. So my total investment was $15 for 2 units and that's why I feel the asking price if high. As you said, it may well be gone if you return. My advice would be to check online to see if this unit is still made or to find out its features, etc. And you might also check your local thrift stores too. Hope this comment helped.

  17. Hi Cheryl, Love your old bread box... Sounds like it fits perfectly in your kitchen.

We have a Bread Machine and LOVE it. We keep a fresh loaf of bead going all of the time --but we limit ourselves as to how much we can eat. (I'd eat the whole thing! ha)

Our bread machine is an Oster.. I don't know anything about the brand you saw.... Sorry.

    Hugs,

  21. Cheryl it's a good thing you aren't closer to me cause you would find that tin gone missing! Cheryl you know I have a bread machine and you know his name. We had a real bread machine for 10 years but it died and I don't remember the brand. Sorry I can't help. It's raining!! Hope you are getting some gentle rain too!!

  22. I like your little bread box a lot.

I'm not a fan of bread made in a bread maching, yet I'd have to replace mine if it ever went out. I use the dough option. You put the ingredients in the machine, press the dough option and let it go. When it is done, it has raised just right. I then pull it out, Then I just form the dough into whatever shape (bread, rolls, etc.), put it in the pans, let it rise again and pop it in the oven. $20 sounds like a fair price, but I know nothing about Pampered Chef machine. There other stuff always seemed good, though.

  26. Google your bread machine. You will be surprised that you can usually find the instruction pamphlet on line where you can download it.

I love your bread box. I hope you will soon make lots of loaves that will find their temporary home there. :)

  29. Love the bread box. The dings just add more character, kind of like wrinkles :)
I have had a bread machine of one brand or another for the past 16 yrs. If it works, under 20 bucks is a deal! You can usually find all the manufacturer info online as well as recipes for your particular machine.
