August looks to be a very busy month with lots going on at The Project and hopefully some things will get done here at this house, too. I'm keeping busy watering flowers because it's been hotter than a firecracker lately and you know what that means in regards to potted flowers. Lots of watering is needed to keep them going. Most of the flowers look okay, but some are on their last legs. I'm to the point of not caring because I'm so tired of the heat!
I wasn't going to show any more photos of The Project until I had some before and after shots, but since this is what we are living, eating and breathing (it seems) lately how about some before and during shots? And it's high time we were getting something done after too long a hiatus, so I'm not complaining. Too much. lol!
This is a before shot of the back of the house. The deck needed more work than we had originally thought. We knew the steps and some of the support beams needed replacing.
The lower door into the basement which you see is open will be replaced with a steel insulated door. The door on the deck which goes into what I call spare room has already replaced.
This is the partially finished deck which has had all the 4x4 beams replaced with 6x6 and an additional beam or two below as well. The railing is yet to be done and the stairs have been fixed.
Work is also underway in the bathroom. We decided to have the toilet moved to the other side and when the carpenter was drilling into the ceiling for the sewer pipe, he got into some electric wire.
So BG has been working on the wiring and you know how one problem often leads to another? Well, the wiring in this house is a total mess. He will be busy trying to track down all the wiring and redoing much of it. Some needs to be done now, the rest will have to wait. Do you know how hot an attic is when it's in the 90s outside? He can't stay up there too long a time.
We worked on the wiring until 9 pm last night in the bathroom and it's now ready for the carpenter to finish the walls and install the toilet and vanity, etc. Soon we'll be able to get the wall painted in there so then the flooring can be installed.
I say "we" but BG does the work, I'm just the cleaner/picker-upper, find the tool he needs, and general go-fer. I've made numerous trips to the Big Town for supplies. Just this week I had to get some drill bits he needed plus a few other things. Our daughter helps when she can, but right now she's busy working on a grant for her school.
Once the deck and bathroom are finished, the carpenter will put a new roof on the part that goes over the deck and spare room. Plus put in a new access to the attic in the hallway. The one now is in a bedroom closet. BG will redo the closet in the spare room once the roof is on and we know there will be no more water leaks.
Just think of all the fun we're having! Aren't you just a wee bit envious? lol!! No, I know you're not, and I don't blame you! I can't wait until all this is done and then maybe, just maybe, we'll get around to finishing a few things here at this house! And then, we'll be able to relax for a while.
Now, I'm off to the Big Town to pick up daughter's payroll for her. She is very busy today and I also have a few items I can get while I'm there. BG will be home soon as he works the summer schedule. I'm going to try to talk him into resting the remainder of the day. He has been working much too hard lately.
Enjoy your Friday and weekend...I'll try to catch up on everyone soon!
Happy Thursday to you!
xo Cheryl
Hello Cheryl, it sounds like a lot of work to be done. It is nice to see the progress being made. I love the butterfly and coneflowers, lovely image! Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteThere will always be those delightful projects that are their own reward! Thanks for the update!
ReplyDeleteI know it's a lot of headaches now, but it will soooo be worth it! hang in there.
ReplyDeleteCheryl - Looks like things are moving along. It's never fast enough tho, is it? Will be nice to have it all finished.
ReplyDeleteJudy
Busy, busy, busy.I hope you all get some time to rest in between all the work.I know that once it's all done it will be lovely.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I admire you guys and am kind of jealous. It is a different story that both my husband and I are senior citizens and any project we may start will end up in big expense of having to hire some one to finish it. LOL
ReplyDeleteI am stationed in Home Depot to sell Solar (NRG). I see a lot of people come to buy material for projects and if I wish that I was younger it would be for home improvement more than any thing else.
You have your hands full! What a big project! In the end it will be worth it! :)
ReplyDeleteLots of hard work....but I know that when this project is finished....it will be just what you had in mind. Our guys all work so hard, and yet they allow us to take part of the credit!! True Love!! It's HOT here as well..a little rain is so needed! Hope you enjoy your Friday!!
ReplyDeleteI like reading and seeing the pictures of your on going project. I am looking forward to seeing the finished home. I think when you put a lot of your own work into a place it seems more precious. Almost every home we have lived in we have done things to it; even some rentals.
ReplyDeleteI know you will be happy when it is completed and I hope it will happen soon. I know what it is like to start one thing and end up with more to do on it than you planned. I do hope you hubby takes a break. Sending hugs your way!
" I'm just the cleaner/picker-upper, find the tool he needs, and general go-fer. I've made numerous trips to the Big Town for supplies." that is a very hard job this I do know:) Sounds like it is coming along. Take care. Hug B
ReplyDeleteWill be worth the hard work Cheryl. Happy Weekend,Francine.
ReplyDeleteOh, you guys have been working hard!
ReplyDeleteIt's coming along... bit by bit. Before you know it, you will be able to do the 'fun' stuff :)
All of the non-fun stuff will be done.. like plumbing, electrical, insulation, cement work...etc.etc.. etc...
Hang in there :)
Hope you all have a nice weekend, and get a bit of relaxing in.
~K.
not at all envious of you! always looks easier until you get into it and find a rat's nest of mess! :) your first shot is beautiful. our heat is kicking the life out of the trees and plants here.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is to hot to be in the attic, but it would be way to cold to do all this work in the winter. projects almost always have a mind of their own... you are getting there and hope all goes smoothly for the rest of the time. do you have to call an inspector to pass your work after each thing? like for the wiring? for the plumbing? here every single thing has to be inspected and the wait is terrible, weeks not days
ReplyDeleteWe don't have to have inspections in this small town. Only on new construction. We are lucky the garage was already there because they wouldn't allow one that close these days! The gas lines were inspected and had to be before the gas was turned on.
DeleteI got caught up in the story and forgot to say STUNNING photo of that butterfly, he looks real to the touch
ReplyDeleteThe weather here has been perfect all week. 80's and low humidity but... You can't go out side because the mosquitoes are so bad.
ReplyDeleteI literally get swarmed when I go out to water my plants. your project looks like a big jog but that deck will be a very nice place to sit outside when the whole thing is done.

That first picture is amazing. You are a wonderful photographer. Of that I am envious. Of all the work you have done in blistering heat plus all that is left to do, not a trace of envy. Sure hope you do take many breaks and enjoy a little R & R now and then.
ReplyDeleteLots of hard work now but what a great feeling you will have when it's all finished! Good job.
ReplyDeleteOh, Cheryl, I get tired just reading this...I cannot imagine living through it.
ReplyDeleteWe know all about renovation projects recalling the ones we did in VA after buying iur home. We spent many weeks in the summer for 2 years commuting from NJ to VA. The best part of any project is when it's done, but then it never really is.
ReplyDeleteOh my you're working so hard. But, so nice to see some of the finished product!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you and your family,
Gert
You know that part where you say you are entirely too tired of the heat....I get that!! And now we are onto even harsher water restrictions....which despite that a neighbor is power washing his driveway!!! And I'm not allowed to water my plants, sigh...idiots.
ReplyDeleteYour project will be so beautiful when it's done, just keep reminding yourself of that.

Sounds like hot and steamy work . . .
ReplyDeleteDoesn't sound fun but the getting finished sounds great!
Lovely pic of the Cone Flower and Butterfly!
I know what you mean about those flowers which have almost "had it"...I have some too. Just trying to save the ones I can. We have gotten a brief break from the heat over the past few days and it has been heavenly. We are also in the middle of major projects at home...I am hoping my new front porch will be ready to use at least my this fall! Right now there are just floor boards with no railings :( Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteit is cute how you say "big town" ... hope you had a nice weekend!! love the blooms. every one on their blogs lately is sharing such gorgeous blooms. we have not seen many in a while. i guess we need some rain around here. woke up to pouring rain today. nice! have a great week & take care. ReplyDeleteHi Cheryl :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for visiting me. I can't wait to see what you do with this house. It sounds like a huge project!
And yes, I know exactly how hot an attic is during the summer LOL
xo,
rue
Cheryl, I am totally exhausted just reading about your remodel. We have done such things to this old farmhouse, but many years ago. These days, I am only up for small projects...the kind that are completed in a weekend.
ReplyDeleteSo...this isn't a very encouraging comment, is it? Oh, but I know you will have a wonderful house when The Project is completed!!
this is for your daughter, right? you're such good parents! don't get too hot! love the butterfly pic...gorgeous!!!
