Colors

Colors...so many colors.  We've been looking at paint samples for our new rental property even though we're still a few weeks from being ready to paint. Our daughter will choose what she wants as
she will be our first renter, but I'm also looking to paint a couple of rooms here once she gets moved.

I've often thought how nice it would be if we could just touch a button on our walls and have a whole different color scheme that would go with each season.  Such as warm, earth tones for autumn and cooler shades for summer.

Many paint their walls all white and I have had them myself.  I now have a soft, light beige in my living room, dining area, and hallway and I really like it even though it doesn't photograph well.  A friend of mine has pastels all over her house.  It works for her as she is what I call a pastel person.  She favors pale pinks and greens and soft yellows in her decor.

Visiting paint departments can be a daunting experience.  Paint colors, brands and types of paint abound.  Do I choose Benjamin Moore or Behr?  Valspar or Sherwin Williams?  Flat, satin, or eggshell?  Semi-gloss for the bathroom?  How about primer?  You can purchase a primer/paint all-in-one.  Do they really cover in one coat?  So many quesions that I'm guessing only experience can answer.  In other words, you have to live with your choice to know if you really love it or wish you'd chosen differently.

If you would care to share your favorite paint colors and types of paint, I'd love to hear about it!

Happy Tuesday to you!

  2. Cheryl, I used to paint all the time. I helped my daughter paint her new home and we did all the painting ourselves. That job just about killed me. To much up and down ladders. Then I did help paint Emma's room. It's a hot pink. Glad she is liking it for a few years. It will all be nice when you decide....but for me picking colors can be tough. As you know some of those 70's colors are coming back.:):) Blessings to you and your daughter, xoxo,Susie

  3. when i was younger, i used to paint the walls every couple of years with different colors.. i loved to change the rooms from year to year.. i let the boys choose the colors for their rooms and wow did we have some different colors.. one year they chose wall paper for one wall and paint to match... never did that again...

  4. I use Sherwin Williams and they have the formula for a lot of other brands colors. I like Benjamin Moore but the price can be off putting. My living room is painted Benjamin Moore Nantucket Gray, which is more green than gray but it is a beautiful color and I have had several people ask for the paint color. My bedroom is Benjamin Moore Wedgewood Blue. Another favorite color is Benj Moore Lenox Tan. I do wish we could change up paint colors easily...I would love a 'smart" house like that.

  5. I have the best of all worlds. My son has his own business . . . PAINTING. He started out in high school working for an attorney friend painting his rental houses and it stayed with him. He does mostly supervising the business now, has quite a crew of people who work for him. But when "mom" needs something painted, he is my "go to" guy. Amazing how he can whip out a room in a short time, excellent at it too! As I think of it, I think it is time to spruce things up around here. I went with lots of color a few years back. . . . I have a fancy espresso in our LR, Forest Green, Harvest Gold to name a few others. Nice to have the color but going with more neutrals and bringing color in with accessories I find more enjoyable. Not giving up the Espresso though . . .

  6. Beautiful fall foliage! And you are right, there are sooo many colors to choose from, some looking exactly like another only with a different name! If I could get by with it, I would have every room red...well, probably not EVERY room...but I gotta have at least one!

  8. Choosing paint colours and paint is a daunting task. I don't enjoy it at all as there are just too many to choose from. I do use Benjamin Moore paint and colours in the satin or eggshell finish. Our open living areas are painted BM's Hepplewhite Ivory which is a very soft creamy yellow. It's a neutral background that gives a warm glow in any season and goes with our furnishings. I like your idea of walls that would change themselves with the seasons. :) Good luck!

  9. I LOVE that first picture! Well, not only experience, but Consumer Reports! I, too, had off white walls for many, many years. But then I came to me senses. So I changed my living room wall to a pretty beige like you did. It is neutral as well, and warm. Two of my bedrooms are pale peach, with light seafoam carpets.

  10. Hi Cheryl!

Your pictures are gorgeous, as always! The colors are starting to turn here in Idaho, not quite as pretty as in Kansas!

I love color, so my walls are definitely not white. My living room is a color called, Buckskin, I love it, it actually changes colors with the different light during the day, it's gorgeous. My Kitchen is a warm beigy (don't think that's a color!) yellow, and the wall closest to my dining room is a gorgeous, kind of dusty green, I love color. I paint everything in my house with a satin finish, it's easy to clean, and looks nice. I have used the primer/paint, and it works well and has good coverage. I prefer Behr, just my preference... :0) Good luck with the re-do, it's hard work!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  11. I would never have imagined in a million year that I would be enjoying gray as much as I am. The three shades I've used over and over are: Agreeable Gray, Anew Gray, and Mega Greige (because they are all a little bit of a beige gray... warmer). Those three are on one family of grays in Sherwin Williams. I like eggshell on the walls and have used both gloss and semi-gloss on the trim. (If you have a lot of defects or an uneven texture, flat paint shows less of this.) In my humble opinion, THERE IS NO ONE COAT PAINT. LOL!

Color is a very personal preference. That said, ONLY you will know the colors YOU will LOVE coming home to. Look forward to seeing your choices!! blessings and hugs ~ tanna

  12. Color is so personal... like clothes, or food... just so individual.
Having shared that thought **smile**, I have to say that Behr is a good paint.
Good coverage and built in primer, great color options, and affordable.
We've renovated so many homes, and we've had so many color schemes. We've used Sherwin Williams, Pratt and Lambert, Valspar, etc... etc..
For my dollar, I prefer Behr and their new Marquee paint seem like it performs nicely... as I just used it on my front door .

Best of luck with your choices, and happy color shopping!

  13. It would be so fun if you could push a button and your decor or walls could change colors according to seasons. We really need to do some indoor painting We have egg shell on our walls and I want to change it all.
Since I am not an expert in wall painting; I think I will look forward to see what you choose to do and the brand yo like the best; please share when you decide. Meanwhile, I loved your photos and my favorite colors are more on the light shades of blue, green and pinks.
    Blessings for you!

  14. I enjoyed your beautiful photos! My house is painted with what we call "historic neutrals": khaki, sage green, warm ivory, pale gold, etc. The rooms are each different, but the colors flow into each other beautifully. The crown moldings and chair rails are white, and the slate in the fireplace is deep charcoal. It all works well. We have no window treatments of any kind, and we have lots of windows. Our house is one-third of a mile from the road down a twisted driveway; privacy is no issue. The house is filled with light during the day and moonlight/starlight/darkness during the night.

You asked about favorite paints. I don't have any, but I do love those paint sample cards you can get at the paint department! I get lots of inspiration from them for my artwork. I especially like the big ones; some are 3 x 5.

  16. I spent my whole life either with beige or white walls so when I got this house, I thought, what the hay. I painted most of my walls blaze orange, the rest peach and used Behr paints which my painter loved. They say neutral shades are best for resale for they are easier to paint over. I love my orange but know it would be a sale turn off. Have fun deciding.

  17. Choosing paint colors is mind boggling to me. Every time I'm sure I have the perfect choice, I try it out in the room and it morphs into a different shade. I wish you luck in your choices.
The fall colors are looking most beautiful in your area. We're just getting started here.

  18. I love your idea of pushing a button and the paint changing with the seasons. Let me know when you patent and bring that idea to market. :-). I bought Dutch Boy 'Tousled Grass' for my kitchen. I know from experience that it really does cover in one coat. But I'm not certain I'll like the look so I haven't done it yet. I'm a chicken.

  19. great goodness....these trees are Gorgeous!!!
Just this past week, I experienced the frustration that can come when choosing paint colors. I chose 4 different colors, (Red, black, turquoise, and yellow)....I was pleased with all but one...the turquoise! It seemed to change colors once my chair was painted. Boy...this is hard! Hope to see what you choose...

  20. Beautiful trees and images! The Behr paint/primer does a wonderful job and covers in one coat (or at least has in my experience). It is crazy trying to pick colors, isn't it? I have used Benjamin Moore White Dove for about 20 years for all my trim paints in the different houses we have lived in. It is a just slightly off-white and so rich looking. xo Diana
