This old barn...

This old barn still has some usefulness.  The advertisement for Meramec Caverns is worn but the Caverns are still a tourist attraction along Route 66 near Stanton, Missouri.  This barn isn't near there, but is seen on Hwy 5 not far from Versailles.  Have you ever been in a cave?  I've been in  Bridal Cave at Camdenton, and Marvel Cave at Branson.  They are both impressive caves, if you like being underground.  As for me, I'm getting more claustrophobic as the years roll by so I'll not be visiting caves again.

  1. Oh, this is such a neat old barn! I've been in Luray Caverns in Virginia twice. (I had forgotten how much I didn't like being down there the first time!)

  4. the first and last time I was in a cave was at age 8, my granddaddy took us on a 2 week tour of the East coast. we stopped in Rock city. my mother should have known better, since from the day i was born i was afraid of the dark. we followed a guide who had a torch and there were torches on the walls. after a walk deep in the cave, he said if you want to see dark, true dark this is it and he put out all the lights. try to imagine a big 8 year old screams echoing in the caverns. and i would not stop until I was out side the cave and never went in another one.
    love this old barn photo

  8. I love barn advertising! Very sweet shot!

I've been in a few caves in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. I think they're quite neat! Unfortunately, while I don't have any claustrophobic problems, now my problem is that caves, by their very nature, are NOT wheelchair accessible. So I don't see me doing any more tourist spelunking either.

  9. What a vintage treasure this barn is! I have been to several caves. Ia am always amazed at the mineral formations--secret little gardens underground.

  10. Very cool barn! Hope that it hangs on for decades to come.

I have been in several caves. The largest cave being Mt. Timpanogos! A very beautiful cave.

  11. Yes, I have been in a couple of the big caves...Virginia (Caverns of Luray) and Arizona (Kartchner Caverns). Like you, I have no interest in caves or caverns, though I found it interesting enough the first time around. Sweet barn with that old tin roof and all those great graphics.

  12. Kind of sad when your once proud usefullness has been reduced to being a billboard.
Not sure I could do a cave or cavern. Wish I could.

  13. Great picture! We went to some caverns when we visited Springfield MO to look at colleges I was thinking of attending. It was GREAT. But we rode in a train of some sort and it was so cool which we enjoyed because it was so hot when we were there. When I was attending college many friends went "caving" and I was too afraid to go thinking something would happen and my mother would find out and I would be in trouble! AND now, like you, I am way too claustrophobic to even think of going!

  14. I bet if that old barn could talk, we would hear some great stories.

    Love the picture.

  15. Oh my goodness, look at that old barn! I love the ad on it! I can remember seeing Meramec Cavern signs on old barns when I was a kid, but I haven't seen any in a looong time. I haven't been in the Lake of the Ozarks area since I was a kid, either... I remember my grandparents taking me on a sea plane ride at Bagnell Dam when I was about 10 or 11, so 30 years ago... that was sooo much fun landing in the water in a plane!!! Very memorable for a child =)

You've brought back some great memories... and, now, some tears, too. I miss my grandparents so terribly bad.

Great barn find & thanks so much for stopping to shoot it & sharing it on Barn Charm, Cheryl! =)

  16. Hi Cheryl, That old barn reminded me of the "See Rock City" barns found all over Tennessee years ago... Rock City (like Meramec Caverns)is still going strong.

  17. what a wonderful old barn, still "working hard"!!

i have visited caverns in pa, by hershey, indian echo caverns. it was magical and i loved it. although we were somewhat "closed in" the caverns were huge and the ceilings were so tall, i did not feel claustrophic. it was many years ago when my boys were little. there were lots of beautiful formations and colors!!

  18. Hi Cheryl!

Isn't it amazing that these beautiful old barns hold up so well?! As I was reading, the song Route 66 kept popping into my head!

I don't like caves either - I think they are a wondrous thing, but they kind of freak me out a little!

    Hugs,
    Barb

    I love that barn!
I have been to the Merimec caves! I was 14. I'm not telling how long ago that was! I don't think I could do it today though.

  21. That poor barn really needs some fixing up! Yes, we went to Luray Caverns for our honeymoon, not the best idea. The height of excitement was seeing a rock formation that looked like a fried egg! I need LIGHT!!!!! I hate caves. I have a friend who is a dedicated caver and ruined her knees at a young age by going over rocks in caves, she needed a knee transplant when she was really young.

  22. I've seen that barn! The caverns are advertised on so many old barns all around the state. It is kind of cool. When our kids were young, we spent a lot of time going to caves around Missouri. They've never bothered me, so maybe I need to consider taking the grands to a few of them. There was one that I cannot recall the location of that was a "living cave" and they used lanterns in order to not disturb the life. That was so many years ago! I'm betting it is no longer open.

Thanks for taking me down memory lane!

  23. I can't believe how colorful the sign is when it has apparently been there a long time.

Yes I have been in a cave...

Oh my barn is at Time Stand Still.

  24. Yep, been there...done that but not for a long time.

My hometown of Stockton is built on a series of caves.

We used to have our Halloween Parties in Fantastic Caverns in my college days. Complete with bats and all.

It's been quite some time since I've been to Bridal Cave too.

You and Farm Boy share the claustrophobic thang sister.

God bless ya and have a marvelous day!!! :o)

  25. Be still my heart....I love old barns. Caves were a favorite of my daughter and husband, so we have been in any and every cave we ever passed on vacation:))
I still remember the signs to
"See Rock City" on barns here in the south from my childhood.
    Thanks for the reminder!

  27. Someone should at least save that roof ad before it deteriorates further!
    No caves for me. Ever.

  28. Yes I have visited both caves a few times each.

More importantly :) I lived in a cave growing up...ok ok- not, but I did lived in the midst of many caves. My dad spent every weekend it seemed like, exploring.

  34. Love this barn! Even though the barn is decaying the bright painted ad still draws attention to this little charmer and its usefulness.
I've been in caverns and one cave I really liked. I'd do it again if my knees would let me descend the many steps one usually has to use to get underground. :)
    Thanks for your visit.

  35. Cool barn.

I've been in two caves before, the Oregon ice caves, which my parent and I visited during my preteen years, and the Sea Lion caves, which I visited more recently (the latter a little stinky lol).

  36. I know this is late but... I was on a hunting trip in northwest Colorado 10 years ago and met a man who was in the billboard business. He told me he got his start many years before painting Meramec Cavern signs on barn throughout the midwest. Seeing this is a nice reminder of him. As for caves, I've done my share of speluncking in places I won't go anymore.
