A decorating dilemma

Internet Photo

A new window treatment is in order for my living room.  The window in this photo isn't a very good representation of my window but since I don't want to take a photo that shows my grody sheers that have been torn by kitty claws, we'll have to use our imaginations a bit.  Picture if you will a larger window, 10 1/2 feet wide by 72 inches tall.  There are 9 separate panes on the order of those in the photo only mine are wider in a rectangle shape.  I need something for privacy yet let light in.  Most blinds I've looked at have been eliminated for one reason or another (the furball).  Mostly because I can't hang them inside the frame or casing, it would have to be an outside mount.

If the window didn't face a busy street, this wouldn't be such a problem.  I'd love to have just sheers.  Have you looked at window treatments lately?  There are so many different colors and styles, it's mind-boggling!  If you have a suggestion for this type of window, I'm all ears!

Bathroom update:  Well, we haven't really started on this project yet.  After all, deer hunting is still going on and the carpenter is big into that. :D Then Thanksgiving is coming up, so it'll be after that.  But!  We have the tile and new counter top, etc, purchased and awaiting installation.

Have a great weekend everyone!
Until next time...

  1. I'll be thinking for you, but in the meantime the curtains in the picture have given me an idea for my window. :)

  2. Cats can do a number on curtains. I can't wait to hear what you end up doing. Maybe you will post a picture.

I need to do something for a huge window I have in my living room, just not sure what I want.

  3. I am decorator challenged so I will be watching for advice with this one along with you. I have mini blinds and I hate them!

I like the furniture arrangement in this photo.

I wonder if heat bothers the TV above the fireplace?

  5. I wish that I had a good suggestion for you because I have a very similar situation facing the front of the house. I made my own draperies with painter's cloth and I like them, I'm not sure how effective they are for privacy...I should check that out. I have no blinds. I think you could hang a double rod...John made my rods so they're not as expensive as some...and put sheers first and panels behind. My kitty has no front claws so that's good because she'd have this place shredded, too.

Having the product is always the first step!

  7. We have a beige blind that accordion pleats up with a string. I'm not so decor savvy to know the proper name, but it lets light in without a full view of our living room. We pull it up during the day sometimes because the cats try to get under it, but they don't sharpen claws on it. (That's what the love seat is for :( )

  8. I have a double rod on my street windows--sheers inside, and tab drapes facing the room. When I bought new french doors for the living room, I got ones with the blinds inside--LOVE um.

  9. no clue what to use. we have the same verticals that are dog proof that have been there for 20 years. they swing loose and are indestructible and when the dogs jump up to bark at whatever floats there boat, the blinds swing madly as they have for years. they need changing but can't think of anything that would not be quickly destroyed so we live in a time warp

  10. Have you thought about shades? There are many styles to choose from. I think they would do a good job of keeping the street noise down and yet you could raise them easily during the day to let the sunshine in. And maybe furball couldn't shred them?

    Good luck!

  11. I am with Deanna! I have pleated cellular shades and my windows are similar to what you describe but mine crank out. I love my shades and when we had Country Cat and Izzy they left them alone because I just put them up and when they were down they just weren't any fun to play with :) They keep the house warm in winter and cool in summer. I do worry about those pesky imposter lady bugs leaving those orange squiqqles on them though-so far so good. They are all I have on the windows. Oh and Good Friday Morning to you Cheryl! Oops I just read they had to be an outside mount. I think they could still work that way but I am betting Stormy would want to get up and under them! I had wood blinds once mounted on the outside of the window frames and they looked fine and Country Cat never bothered them except to stick her tiny feetie under them now and then. A novel. Sorry :)

  13. How about using shutters?

Hope you find the right solution :)

  14. You would have to hang the window treatment outside?? Gosh, wouldn't the weather wreck it? We had some windows that didn't really have a frame to mount anything, but we just went a bit wider and attached the rod to the wall. Sorry I don't have any ideas, I am so bad at this sort of thing. But I hope you show us what you do!!

  15. No clue with the window treatments! Had enough trouble finding the ones I currently have in our living room/dinning room. I purchase drapes, a thin material and if we need to can just close them at night. Your living room is really pretty! You did a great job decorating. Looks pretty professional to me!

  18. maybe a sheer with a heavy curtains, floor length. And a nice valance over all of it. You can make a valance with wood, padding and wrap in a nice material. Have fun with it!

  19. Hi Cheryl!

Are you sure you don't live at my house?! My windows sound just like yours, only I only have 5 windows, not 9! I have blinds on them - nothing on top . . . because I am so indecisive! I also face a busy street, and I don't like the noise or the thought of people looking in my window.

Maybe shutters would look nice, then you could open them for light, and close them at night, or for privacy?! I like the blinds in the photo, they actually look like they are on the outside. I would want some kind of topper - just me... :0) I really like that living room, wish mine looked like that!

    Good luck!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  22. I would be embarrassed to show my windows...I have wanted something totally different for 2 or 3 years...but have even looked at drapes/curtains and cannot find a single thing I even begin to like. I am at my wits end...and we have 3 furballs! there is always dirty spots in certain areas of whatever I have up. And my window blind at the head of the bed has been destroyed.

  23. All of our windows have blinds of some type. Several of mine are quite old and have seen better days. I look forward to seeing what you come up with because I'm trying to figure out what to do too :)
    Have a joyous Sunday!
    Blessings,
