Pretty Horse, Nice Fence

One of the fun things about a drive in the country is getting to see horses in various colors and sizes.  Whether this one is a paint or a pinto is something I'm not qualified to say for sure, but my guess is that it would be called a paint judging by the size and shape.  I wonder if this guy has been wallowing in the dirt or just needs a good brushing?

Most of the farm fences in our area are pretty much alike and are usually woven wire or barbed-wire like this one.  I liked the posts in this fence.  This photo was snapped about 10 days ago.

Linking to Theresa's Good Fences

A memory.....when I was a youngster growing up on the farm we had a number of horses and one day my dad brought home a bay horse and a pinto.  The pinto was a little smaller than the horse in the photo above.  The bay was the same size as the pinto and had a blaze of white on his face and was named Blaze.  The pinto became my riding horse at the time and I called her Sally.

My older brother, who rode Blaze, and I raced our horses up and down the lane at the farm.  He would always beat me.  Blaze was fast enough to be entered into the races at the county fair and won a few.  Sally was a good horse but not all that fast.

My dad, who would sell almost anything if he could make a dollar, eventually sold Sally.  I had other horses to ride, one named Star became my favorite and would also get sold.  When I was a teenager, I got off the school bus one day and as soon as I went into the house I told my mother that I was going to saddle up Star and go for a ride.  She had to tell me that Star was gone.  Dad had sold her without telling me he was going to do so.  Yes, I was heartbroken.  I loved that horse and she was the last one I considered mine.  Other horses, including Blaze, were around for me to ride, but I never forgot Star and I remember wondering if Star missed me, too.

We're having some beautiful spring weather this week.  Hope it's a beautiful day for you.

Happy Thursday to you!

  2. Pretty horse and that's so sad! I would imagine that Star missed you also- I think horses are pretty darn smart- smarter than a lot of people give them credit for. Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. Now if your dad could read that from your perspective, he'd feel as bad as we do. My goodness, that was a callous disregard for your feelings, almost as if you were not to be considered. Today, we may coddle our kids too much based on the way we were treated as children. Sometimes parents are so dense!

  6. Wonder what your Dad thought (after he sold Sally) --when he 'noticed' how upset you were. Bet he was sorry he sold Sally... Oh Well---guess he did what he thought he needed to do, telling himself that you'd 'get over it'..... Tis Life.

I have a 'heavenly' post today. Check it out --if you haven't yet.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  8. Sometimes parents forget that children have feelings, too. I love trying to photograph horses. I've read that they graze approximately 95 percent of the time. I've had one what I've considered amazing horse photo some years back and if that percentage is correct there probably won't be another one!

  11. What I love about this horse is his tail! Long and multi-colored, so pretty. What a story. He likely thought if you got to say goodbye, you would cry so much. But you probably cried anyway! I had this happen with a pet of mine when I was a little girl. I came home from school and he was gone!! I never did know what my mom did with him or where she took him.

  12. beautiful horse and a sad sad memory... i never had a horse but always had dogs. we moved from Savannah to KY and i had two 6 month old puppies in KY.. we went home for Christmas to Savannah and when we got back to KY the puppies were gone. daddy had asked the neighbor that kept complaining about them to do the dastardly deed and he did. the last thing the puppies had done was tear up 2 feather pillows that were on the neighbors porch rail...

  13. I love a good country scene with barbed wire...you gotta have barbed wire! This is lovely horse but I am so sorry to hear this sad story about Star. How long did it take you to get over that? I used to ride my neighbor's horse when I was a girl....until it got spooked and side-swiped a tree with me on it, knocking me off! Those neighbor girls ran off to get the horse and left me on the ground. Needless to say, I lived to tell about it :)

  14. There is such a bond between a girl and her horse. I understand how you felt. I've been there and it was heartbreak the day we parted.

  17. Hi Cheryl~

Beautiful horse . . . I like the fence too - old posts and barbed wire really are timeless.

For some reason, there is a special bond between a little girls and horses . . . always heartbreaking when it's over. My husband father used to sell his pets, which were horses and cows, and he was always heartbroken too. I'm so glad you have those special memories to hold in your heart.

    Very sweet post!

    Hugs,

  19. I love horses, too...we have a couple of horse farms close to our house and I love when I driving down the road and see all the beautiful horses grazing in the fields. That is a sad story about Star and how your dad sold her. When I lived in KY for a few years as a teen, we had a horse and pony. I especially loved Judy, the horse. When we moved back to IL, we had to sell Judy and Dimple (the pony) - and like you, my dad did it while me and my sister were at school. It was heartbreaking to come home to an empty field and barn.

  20. That's a bittersweet memory. How nice to have horses to ride when you were growing up. Sad though that your favorite horse was sold. I never learned to ride but love to watch horses. Sweet hugs, Diane

  21. What bittersweet memories, Cheryl. If parents only knew what they did to their kids. After I was married to my first husband HIS FATHER sold my Quarterhorse Ginger without a word. I was so mad but completely incapable of doing anything about it. There are some animals that are just burned into your memory..sounds like Star and Sally were yours. xo Diana

  22. I am sure Star missed you too. It had to be so sad not to be able to say goodbye. I LOVE horses too, though I never had one. Several of my best friends did though.

  26. I agree that that crooked fence post is most interesting...a great photo op!

Oh my...what a sad story! The surprise factor must have made it especially difficult. As an animal lover, I can feel your pain. We get so attached to our babies. (That is why my husband decided not to get a cow to raise for beef, even though we have plenty of space for one. He knows that we girls could never eat a "pet.")

Hope your weekend is filled with good things!

  27. Though we live in the country, we enjoy riding in the country, and like you see so many beautiful animals, especially horses, a beautiful pot. I am always amazed at the different types of fence that farmers put up! ~smile~
Loved reading your story of your horses, and yes, I bet Star missed you too! Thanks for sharing.

  30. I enjoyed reading your experiences with horses. I love horses and have ridden a few. I feel sad that your Dad sold Star. I had a favorite horse named Lady. She wasn't much of a Lady since she always tried to rub me up against bushes and rocks to get me off. I was pretty young at the time; but I did like riding her.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts today; I enjoyed the memories it brought back. Blessings and hugs for you!

  31. some one looks well feed and thoroughly happy!! happy weekend!! ( :
i bet Star had a nice life after you. but probably missed you tons. i am only guessing ... do you think you Dad needed money? or was the horse too expensive? i sure hope that your Dad meant well and didn't mean to hurt your feelings. parents for the most part always mean well and try their best(s), you know?
