A Wintry Day

Yesterday...
What is a girl to do when there is 4 inches of new snow on the ground and the wind chill temperature is in the negative column and it's too cold to go outside and snap photos?  Eat ice cream, of course!  With strawberries.  Oh, I needed it like I need another hole in my head, but it sure was good.

All afternoon while the winds were raging, I kept glancing at a few of my favorite cookbooks I keep on the old Hoosier cabinet and thought about trying out a new recipe, but ice cream seemed to be calling my name even on a cold, winter day.  Maybe today is the day for baking.  It's certainly a good day for extra warmth from a hot oven!

I'm anxious to see if the foundation workers will show up today.  I wouldn't blame them if they didn't as it is unbelievably cold today even for Missouri with the wind chill factor.  I listened to the jackhammer for 2 days last week and I'm glad to say that part of the job is finished.  The kitties were all pretty much bummed out about the noise and hid for the biggest part of the day.

Well, all the kitties except Callie, who is not afraid of anything.  When she wasn't sleeping, she had her head between the curtains at the front window with her little pink nose pressed against the glass watching everything that was going on outside.  A very loud jackhammer wasn't going to faze her one bit!

It was a fairly nice day Saturday in spite of that snow you see on the ground and I went out to get a few groceries and make a stop at the hardware store for BG for something he needed.  I had left my car in a spot where I thought I could make a getaway if I needed to with all the equipment around.  Picture my jaw dropping open when I first spotted the little man sitting in the chair at the front of the above trailer!  I don't know when they put him there, but I appreciate their sense of humor even if I couldn't decide if he had on ear muffs for the cold or if that was protection from the noise.

Stay safe and warm if you are having this very cold, snowy weather.  My plan is to stay in today and make a big pot of soup and perhaps bake something, sip some tea and get my new Nook out and read while that soup is simmering.

Until next time...

  2. Aw....sweet kitty! My Sundae would have been watching from the window too!
Cute little "man" on the back of the trailer: at least they have him bundled up in the cold!

  3. Well at least if they get noisy again, you know where a set of earmuffs are. How cute.
    Stay warm.

  7. I love ice cream and enjoy it all year around too. In fact I have 2 tubs of Candy Cane ice cream to eat up this winter. LOL I might just have some today. The 'man' on the trailer hitch is too cute! It's going to be +10C (50 F) here today. That's a heat wave after the -20 to -30C temperatures we've had lately. Freezing rain then rain this afternoon then a flash freeze overnight. Won't that be nice? Stay safe and cozy inside.

  11. That dish of ice cream and berries looks delish, even if it is COLD outside.
Comfort food is a necessity in these kind of temps. It's even cold down here in Texas and I'm craving soup or chili! Not sure which one yet..
Adorable little fella on that trailer... hope he's warm! lol...
    stay inside and stay warm...

  13. Someone has a sense of humor putting that little man on the trailer. The ice cream looks good but I just can't eat it when it's this cold out. It's -40 windchill here.
Stay warm and enjoy the soup and your reading.

I can eat ice cream all year round too but with a hot syrup on top.
That poor fellow looks like he's seen a lot of inclement weather!
Stay warm and enjoy your book.

  15. Good Morning Cheryl, It is really cold here with the snow on the ground. The blowing snow was a big problem with the winds. Soup or Chili sounds great for the crazy cold weather we have been having. Have a great day and stay warm. Hugs and Prayers from your NW Missouri Friend.

  18. It's that catitude that calicos have! We beat you with 8 maybe 10 inches. We are staying huddled inside. No digging out till tomorrow and hoping no busted pipes anywhere! At least we have sun.. :)

  19. Hi Cheryl~

I can eat ice cream anytime, any day! I have to provide refreshments at DUP (Daughter's of Utah Pioneers) today, and guess what we're having...ICE CREAM! Of course, I'm going to have hot fudge cake with it, so maybe it will balance out... ;0)

I'll bet you are glad to have that noise over with - it will be so nice to stop the leaks. Your cat is adorable! They can be such curious little creatures.

Gotta love someone's sense of humor! If you have to be in the cold, might as well make the best of it, and keep people grinning!

    Stay warm!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  21. Well now, you're gonna have to go back out and check under the ear muffs to see if there are ear plugs. Then, we'll ALL know it was for the noise instead of the cold. LOL

Love the image you shared of Callie. And I can just picture her little nose pressed to the window...watching!!! I'm all for ice cream any ol' day summer or winter....I have some in the freezer and a couple of homemade brownies left from the weekend, maybe that'll be our dessert tonight after our tortilla soup....a brownie sundae.

  23. I must say the your plan for the day is a good one. I hate going out in the cold so for now I don't need too. It's not snowing today so the sky is clear and the inversion has gone away for a brief time.
My wish would be to do my computer work, and sit by he fireplace and read a good book with a cup of hot chocolate. Alas, that it is not my fate; I need to get Christmas put away.
I loved the pictures and thoughts. Perhaps, I will go have a dish of sweet ice cream before I begin.
    BLessings!

  26. I had ice cream this evening! What is it about cold weather and the need to eat something sweet? I crave sweets when it is cold, salt when it is hot.

Hopefully temperatures will get back to normal soon! Stay warm!

  27. I've been going through my recipes looking for oldie but goodie ones that I haven't made in awhile, too cold to go outside. I can eat ice cream in the winter too, or pretty much any time of the year :)

  31. lol on the kitty not being phased by the jackhammer. :)

My son wanted ice cream and we've got those negative double digit temps too.

Third day of school they're off tomorrow (for extreme cold).

    Stay warm. :)

  33. Hi Cheryl, We've had this horrible weather here too… The thermometer on the deck yesterday morning was MINUS 10 degrees… Gads---so so so so RARE for us… BUT--today got above freezing for the first time all week… Schools have been out all week and are out again tomorrow. There's still a lot of snow and ice around.

I thought you had made some "Snow Cream" when I saw you picture of the ice cream. Have you made that??? I grew up with Snow Cream… YUM…

    Stay WARM…
    Hugs,
    Betsy
