Strolling Through The Gardens

School has begun for many this week.  I will never forget my first day of school in the little one-room country school that looked much like the one above.  If you are interested in my memories of a one-room country school, you can read about it in a post I did about 3 years ago here.

All of the photos today are from my walk a couple of weeks ago in the Shelter Insurance Garden in Columbia, MO, aka COMO.

There are so many beautiful flowers, trees and shrubs to see.  A nice little waterfall and reflecting pool, a rose garden and the replica of a one-room school in the photo above are among the many delights to see in this 5 acre garden.

The garden is free and open to the public and it is just a great place to stop for photos and to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet after a few hours of shopping and the location is good, too.

Concerts are often held in the park during the summer season.  Weddings are also held there.  Clubs have meetings, mothers bring their children for a stroll around the grounds, workers from the nearby insurance company can often be seen taking walks on their lunch break.  And, occasionally, you might have the whole place to yourself!

There are many other parks in this city, of course, but this is the one that is close to where I do my shopping and is most convenient for me to stop by.

I hope you enjoyed this little stroll through the gardens.  I'm off now to COMO to see if I can find a certain camera I have in mind to try.  Hope your day is a good one!

Edited to add:  The shot of the schoolhouse is with the other camera I tried out.  You can see that it's not quite as sharp as it should be.  I didn't have the zoom extended all that much.  Just an FYI in case anyone else was thinking to buy it.

Until next time...

  7. What GORGEOUS shots!!! I love those huge leaves, my next door neighbor has some like that and I don't know what they are. Also the yellow flowers that just POP out of the blackness, beautiful. Your pink and cream colors rose shot is beautiful, too.

  8. What a nice garden to walk and gather wool. I would like to have a place like that close by.
Take a look at the Canon Powershot SX series. They have more zoom power and Image stabilization. I need a new point and shoot and just read about these.

  10. These photos are gorgeous! You always have such beautiful pictures. I actually really like the school house. It may not meet your expectations as far as the camera goes but I love the house itself. My hubby and I almost bought one years ago. We had plans for it to become our home. At the last minute we changed our minds. But all the old school houses intrigue my husband and I.

Your garden walk was enjoyed by me, too. Thank you

  23. Thanks for sharing your walk through these lovely photos, Cheryl. I know what you mean about trying out a camera and not being satisfied with the results.
Since I am in the same position of looking for a new digital, please let me know if and when you decide on another model and if you can, please share your decision.

  24. I am amazed!!! Is that one plant with the huge green leaves called an Elephant Ears? I see those in the tropics. What an astounding park. And oh so beautiful.

As for the one room school...I posted about the historic one here in this town where I live some months ago. They're so part of our culture. You were lucky to attend one such school. My aunt taught in a one room school in Nebraska. Such stories she told us. I would love to hear about your experience. Will check out your link.

  25. Mornin'....
I am having my first cup of coffee with you this morning...it's 6:50 and I am wondering why I woke up so early...:))
Loved seeing such a beautiful place. A one room school house...my goodness, even as old as I am, I never attended one. We lived in the city, tho, so guess that's one reason.
    I just discovered I wasn't a follower...(I get 3 lashes with a wet noodle) but....I AM NOW. :)

  26. The garden looks like a treasure and I'm amazed that the admission is FREE!

  27. I love that it's free to visit the garden!

We have a park close by w/a one-room-school house on the property (complete w/outhouse and big bell in the back). It's never open to go inside though. I think they're great to see. Huge reminders of how far school has come, for sure!

  28. Of COURSE I had to go to all my favorite tech review sites and read all about it! CNet has no reviews, but PC Mag has it as the Editors Choice. It looks like a great camera! I am so glad for you, and hope you have finally found a keeper. I lOVE your first picture. How did you manage to get such a calm and peaceful closeup of Stormy? And your picture with Stormy, the flowers and the bottle, I love that one! Try straightening the picture up, it may be a bit crooked? Maybe you are not holding it level? If you straighten it and the bottle is level but everything else is crooked, it is something else. Your sunflower pictures are exceptional, every one is beautiful!!! You can actually see the seeds sticking up from the flower.
