I was going to make this a wordless Wednesday post, but do you know how hard it is for me to remain wordless? Especially when I have a pretty and new-to-me sunflower to show. I have shown this one before, but this shot is a little better than the last one. I'm loving this color! But, I'm sad to report, something is getting into my sunflowers and has broken some of them. It's sad to see those pretty heads wilting and dying.
Here is my repurposed planter for flowers that I mentioned back in the spring. We had an old fire pit that was too dilapidated to use, so we discarded the top part and took out the grate. I had BG drill some holes in the bottom for drainage and I used some spray paint I had left over from last year and I now have a new and different planter.
I've been meaning to show this nest. As you can see in the photo on the left, the tree is dead and the nest is very near the top. See the ear of corn hanging from a branch that the bird appears to be looking at?
And what's amazing about the nest is that after the storm that went through the area a couple of weeks ago, that took down a number of trees, the nest is still there! I'm always amazed at a bird's handiwork in fashioning a nest that withstands high winds and rain and hail.
I believe this is a hawk in the nest, but I'm not sure what kind. Maybe a Red-tailed Hawk? I would see him or her sitting in the nest nearly each time I drove by this tree.
Happy Wednesday to you!
xo Cheryl
For me, the awesome sunflower is the star of the day! I have always thought ones like this were painted! And so they are...by God! It is so beautiful. Is this your tree? How wonderful that you have a hawk nest in it, And maybe baby hawks soon. They must have built it really sturdy! I know that some can weigh many, many pounds.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning, Colorful sunflower and great photo. Do you think squirrels are knocking down the sunflowers?
ReplyDeleteAmazing that the hawk's nest withstood the storms.
I love that you repurposed the fire pit for a flower container. My husband drilled holes in some plastic pots for an elderly neighbor yesterday.
I guess the hawk knew what she was doing when she made her nest there. The red sunflower is a stunner!
ReplyDeleteThe color of that sunflower is gorgeous, indeed. And the hawk and it's nest is impressive. What a clever idea to repurpose the firepit into a planter.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you decided to include the words today. I'm not sure I would have noticed the ear of corn up there and it's too cool to miss. What a fabulous and strong nest. I, too, am impressed by the handiwork of the birds and also the way spiders construct their webs. It is high season for spiderwebs around here. I'm removing them from the house daily.
ReplyDeleteThat sunflower is a beauty. Love that color.
Your re-purposed flower planter is charming. Great idea.

ReplyDeleteI have got to get a sunflower like that. It is gorgeous. You might think the dreaded vole for its decline. They attack the roots of plants and suddenly what was a healthy plant just starts to fail. Look for 50 cent sized holes in the area or even an abandoned mole hole . Good luck. .
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that sunflowers came in any color other than yellow! That's gorgeous, and I'm going to track it down for next year. Hope you can find the culprit that's wrecking your flowers.
ReplyDeleteyou have the most beautiful flowers! how did that corn get up there? a squirrel? i too am amazed at how sturdy those nests are!
ReplyDeletethat red sunflower is gorgeous! holy smokes! glad the hawk nest stayed put!
ReplyDeletei feel like a broken record ... i say this often. i will say i love spring flowers, then when summer comes i say i love summer flowers. what about fall flowers? i just can not forget them either. oh, heck ... i just love flowers. there you go - i am so so torn. flowers are awesome!! happy times. love you!! big big hugs. ( :
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Cheryl! That sunflower is gorgeous! Your petunias are lovely, a gray squirrel had its way with all my purple petunias... just chewed them off and threw them over the pot! Just the purple ones! My guess would be a Red-tailed Hawk too. A very Happy Wednesday to you too with big old Missouri hugs thrown in AND we need to pray for rain!
ReplyDeletei must say i have never in 5 years been able to post a Wordless post.. i tried but never could. beautiful red sunflower, sorry they are wilting. super great idea on the planter. maybe i can get bob to do that for our old grill that he still has not dragged to the front yard...
ReplyDeleteLooks like a hawk to me, too. How interesting to be able to watch the goings on with her. I didn't even know that sunflowers came in that color. You know how much I adore my bolero lilies...hmmm... What's the point of a wordless blog post? I've never quite understood the concept.
ReplyDeleteWOW that is one big bird. Love the beautiful red flower.
ReplyDeleteI have been on the fence about the different colored sunflowers, but this one has sure pushed me over the edge into loving them! I love your new planter, too. Great idea for that. I have no idea on the ID of the hawk...but wonderful that you could capture it at all. I always wonder how the birds' nests withstand some of the winds around here, too.
ReplyDeleteCheryl, I sure would love a bunch of those beautiful sunflowers. Love the planter of flowers too. I hate to see nest on the ground after a storm. xoxo,Susie
