Random 5 Friday

It's hard to believe that it's Friday already!  It seems only a few days ago that I was griping talking about the winter weather in January and saying that we still had February to get through and here we are with the first 3 weeks under our belts.  Now, let's see what I can come up with for Random 5 Friday hosted by Nancy at A Rural Journal.

1.  We have another feral kitten that we are trying to tame.  Not to live with us, but to find her a home.  Isn't she cute?  She is probably the hardest one to get close to that we've had yet.  She's a tough little girl having survived living out in the cold weather we've had this year.

2.  I can't believe what a man at an animal shelter told me recently.  I had called about the kittens I wanted to bring in if we didn't find homes for them.  He questioned me about the kittens and I told him about the neighborhood mama that brought us the kittens after they were born.  He suggested that we not feed them and maybe the little family would go elsewhere.  Really??  Not feed hungry kitties that are trying to survive in this very cold and often snowy weather?  I just can't do it.  What do you think?  Is he right?

3.  Speaking of  cold and snowy weather, it's gone.  At least for now.  We've had some really warm days this week with temps reaching 60 one day.  That means all the snow finally melted.  A thunderstorm even came through Wednesday night and we had pretty high winds yesterday and last night.

4.  One of my favorite antique/flea markets is closing soon.  Some booths had some really good sales.  I bought an old jar that was made into a lamp.  The shade needs replacing or recovered.  Why do I keep adding to my to-do list?

5.  I have not watched any of the Olympic games this year.  I used to love to watch figure skating, but with the scoring the way it is now, I just can't get excited about it.  It seems very unfair to have athletes falling on the ice and still winning medals ahead of those who stay on their feet.  My favorite skater of all time is Michelle Kwan and falling during her skate kept her from winning the gold in 2002.  Gosh, has it really been that long ago?  Now it doesn't seem to matter if they fall or not.

Happy Friday to you and thanks for stopping by and thanks to Nancy at A Rural Journal for hosting Random 5 Friday!

Until next time...

  1. In the town I live in, if you feed a stray cat for three days it is then considered yours - that little kitty is very cute though!

  2. I'm with you on the figure skating - crazy scoring nowadays!
Here, in the UK, we have a cat population boom, and the RSPCA check that you've neutered your cats - is that what the man at the shelter was worried about?
But what a cute, cute kitty :)
Great Random 5 and have a fab Friday!

  3. I'm so glad there are people with soft hearts like yours who will feed innocent creatures. That little kitten didn't ask to be abandoned and in all that snow! Poor thing. My daughter lived at the lake for 7 years and kept corn out for the deer, feed scraps and cat food to the stray cats and kittens and raccoons and fox....and anything else that wandered up. She never regretted it. Not once.

  4. Cute little kitty.
    Gorgeous shots!
    Thanks for sharing.
Hope to see you on my blog:)

  5. HI Cheryl What a cute Kitty that is. How could you not feed him. I do think sometimes animals need a helping hand when the weather is very bad. Have a great weekend.

  6. I read your comment on Brenda's Cozy Little House about having kitties and house plants.. I know what you mean. I have two kitties and Pippa, the little girl kitty, loves to chew on my plants.
You are a blessing to the cute little feral baby.. Maybe, in time, he/she will let you get close to it.
There are folks who fix insulated boxes for feral kitties to live in in the cold.
I guess the man is just not a cat/animal lover like you are.
    Blessings,

  7. She is beautiful Cheryl. Such a sweet face. If we didn't run around so much and weren't thinking of moving I would take her in a heartbeat! That so and so at the shelter is a jerk. Hope it isn't the shelter I am thinking of. Thank you for watching after their little selves.
We are sad over the store you are speaking of too.. :(
The only event I watched on the Olympics was the curling.
Enjoy your weekend Cheryl and Good Fridy Morning to you!

  8. My sister had a feral family and while she did not bring them in she took them, as she gradually tamed them, into their 'barn' / actually a large garage outbuilding at the end of their backyard property. Of course she could not find homes for them and as she gradually tamed them over time, they ended up coming to live in her house with her other cats :)

  9. that antique store looks like a great place to look around. i have watched a few moments of the Olympics ... last night i was turning off the tv .. i think you know we have rabbit ears & watch Netflix on our PS3 so i usually get the tv on our news channel before i turn it completely off - for the morning viewing & they were showing figure skating & it was 10 pm ... now if it was earlier i would watch ... but i was ready for bed not staying up to watch. why so late??! that stinks. i love the figure skating, swimming & what is that sport called where use brooms on the ice??! it is right there at the tip of my tongue?! oh pooh. any who ... love that. would so love to try it. 10. I agree with you about the figure skating. The kitty is a real cutie pie.

  11. Seems rather strange to me that someone who works at an animal shelter would suggest you not feed the kittens. Sounds kinda mean to me.

  12. I watched some ice dancing last night and did not think that the best won gold. I've decided that I am old and cranky. In fact, I was being so snippy about the performances that John mentioned it. Cranky Pants is my new moniker. Ha!

Oh my heart goes out to this little kitty because she looks so much like Fioré who was also a feral kitty. As my vet once said, calicos brains are as scrambled as their coats. No, that man at the shelter is NOT an animal lover. Sigh.

  13. She is a beauty.
Feeding cold helpless kittens is not wrong..... they were wrong.
Too bad about the flea market I would love to have seen it.
Michelle Kwan was an incredible skater. Hug B

  14. Such a sweet kitty. As much as I love to watch the Olympics, I have caught precious little of it this time round. Enjoy your weekend!

  15. That kitten is so adorable -- feral cats are so difficult to bond with if they don't get a human touch from the beginning... I do she hope she comes around for you and finds a good home.

No Olympic-watching here this year. Haven't been enthused about them since they went to the 2-year schedule for summer/winter.

  16. I can't not feed starving kitties. I blame my mother. Years ago, I had a feral community in my little barn/shed of at least three females and their kittens 15cats in all. I was trapping kittens right and left, giving them away, saving the sickly. I finally caught one of the females and fixed her, but I never caught Grandma Cat, or Mom Cat and they eventually died. That was quite the ordeal. People were calling me to my face, Cat Whisperer--behind my back probably crazy cat lady. :) I have two now--outside. One is 15. She is tough. And the other was a stray male two years ago. IF ONLY I wouldn't feed them when they show up, but I do. Hee hee.

  17. I hope you never change in your kindness to the kittens. =)

It is kind of strange... seems like so many of us used to watch the Olympics... and so many are not. I wonder what the "ratings" of the number of folks this time in comparison to the past. What's up with us?

Have a great weekend, Cheryl. blessings ~ tanna

  18. Hi Cheryl - what a beautiful photo of your feral kitten. I hope you do find a good home for her. She is a pastel calico or dilute calico. I'd scoop her up in a minute. I'm glad you didn't listen to that heartless man at the shelter. Around here they tell you that if you feed a feral or stray cat then it is yours. Nice, eh! So if a starving cat comes along they expect you to ignore it. I think these people have lost all empathy for animals when they start giving out instructions like that. She's beautiful and she will find a good home. Have a good weekend. Deb

  19. Morning, I cannot believe the man said not to feed the kittens, come on, no feelings at all.......would love to go to the flea market there, Fun, Blessings Francine.

  20. Cheryl,

The weather pattern have been crazy. We are thankful for every nice day we can get. This week we had a couple sunny days with nice temperatures, but the wind blew so hard it was miserable to be outside.

I love the flea market picture; looks like a fun place to explore.

The Hubby and I have been watching the Olympics. It's quality tv and I like the human interest stories. I do agree with your comment about the skaters falling and still getting a medal.

  21. The shelter guy is wrong in my opinion.

The Olympics lost my attention years ago.

Our weather has been warm this week too. I am enjoying it.

Stopping by on R5F. Have a great weekend!

  22. glad you had a warm-up!

from someone who has been feeding between 100-250 whistling ducks for over 3 mos, i can't say i'd do as the shelter guy said. :)

  23. It's wonderful that there are people like you in this world. Of course we have to help those who cannot help themselves. I just hope someone can catch the mother cat and have her spayed so this won't happen again. The kitty is adorable, as are all of yours.

  24. What a sweet face and lovely eyes :)

  25. no Olympics for me but if i did watch the only thing i would watch is the skating..i do like diving in the summer Olympics.
i think the man that said that is in the wrong job...of course you have to feed them.
there are so many states now that have feral cat programs and it seems to be working.
in New Mexico, one of the bloggers said they have feral cat barn programs, they bring the feral cats to live in the barn and keep the rodents down. she got 2 of the cats for her barn, 1 disappeared the other one is now walking in the house sometimes.

  26. Think your reputation has spread and you have become the drop off place for unwanteds. She is a beauty.
I have watched very little of the Olympics, not sure why. Years ago, there was more personal history and great back stories of the athletes from all the countries that I enjoyed. Now we seem obsessed only with our own and winning.

  27. What a cute kitty! I hope you can get her tamed and find a good home for her.
I have watched the figure skating at the Olympics but agree with you about the scoring. It's just not as fun to see it as it used to be.

  28. Oh no, I shop in flea markets in mid Missouri frequently. Do you mind if I ask which one is closing? Twyla

  29. What an adorable kitten. I do hope you find a home for her. I couldn't NOT feed an abandoned animal. Our snow is pretty much gone as well. And I feel the same way about the Olympics....especially the summer gymnastics. Can't wrap my arms around the scoring for that anymore.
    Visiting from R5F.

  30. That is the cutest kitty! She has such unique markings. I hope you'll be able to tame her. I've tamed several strays by feeding them and just being patient and they eventually warm up to me. I couldn't not feed a hungry animal! I know by feeding them they will keep coming around, but secretly that's what I want anyway :) I love animals!

  31. What a sweet and beautiful kitten...and no I do not agree with the man....How can you just ignore a hungry cold kitten...All life is important. They probably came your way because you are a kind hearted gal....Sorry, I got on my soap box...I just appreciate all life and want to do my part in seeing that it's needs are met.....

  32. Oh my if I was there I would take in that kitten in a heart beat. What a cutie. The shelter guy was dead wrong. You just don't leave innocent animals to fend for themselves in the dead of winter or for that matter any time. Shame on him.
I love that you left out bird seed in the snow for the birds. We did the same thing. We feed neighborhood kitties, birds, squirrels etc...because we have soft hearts and a lover for God's critters.
I know what you mean about the Olympics. I'm not watching the Ladies skating at all. First you already know the outcome before the event which takes away the surprise but yes the scoring is weird and just not right.

  33. Cheryl, That little kitten is so sweet looking. It's sad that people do have their animals fixed, so the babies starve. Hope your weekend is great, xoxo,Susie

  34. I am right with you when it comes to watching the Olympics... The politics including the judging STINK! It's all RIGGED. That little South Korean gal should have won the gold...

You are just a CAT LOVER... You would never let them starve. BUT--IF I had too many cats or dogs around my area, I would NOT feed them... Maybe in Spring when it's warmer you can stop feeding them--unless you truly don't mind.. It's definitely your decision!

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  35. I'm not a cat person but I would find it hard to ignore that little face!
We haven't watched the Olympics much either ... pretty sad!
    Have a great weekend!

  36. That little feral is adorable and apparently very hardy . I can't believe an animal shelter would be so heartless!

  37. Good for you to keep hanging in there to take care of those little kitties. Somebody must care for them.

  38. Oh My Goodness- That kitty looks just like my Mistycat that my son rescued. She was the best cat we ever had and the smartest. I have not had the heart to get another kitty after we lost her. She called us hers for 11 years. xo Diana

  39. Cheryl, I can. not. imagine. not feeding a dear little kitten in the cold. Cannot. (Which is why we always have a cat or two or three that are coming to our back porch.) And that little kitty face is just the cutest!

God bless you for caring for the little critters!

  40. We have watched some of the olympics but just cannot get into them any like we used to. Sort of like the ones that are timed best, so nothing is left to judges;-) I loved Oksana Baiul, Michelle Kwan, and Kristi Yamaguchi. Hated how Oksana had so many problems later.

It is hard to see animals go hungry...however, sometimes one just cannot afford to feed them all. But if I could, I would. I never could just leave something to go hungry. I do think that was an odd comment for the animal shelter worker to make...

    ReplyDelete
  41. That kitten is adorable!! In the Bible it says it is our job to take care of the animals. I have been feeding that stupid rabbit all through this nasty cold. It is destroying my shrubs and come spring I will put moth balls under the deck and see if it goes elsewhere but for now it is safe here. I love every bit of the Olympics but agree with you on the skating. The winner in my mind did not get the Gold.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I too would feed the cats if near me, so no do not agree with his comment. Maybe he would rather have to remove dead cats than accept live ones...how sad.

  43. A great looking store, fun stuff!! I feed everything that comes to my house, you are very sweet to take care of the kitties, you are doing the right thing!!

I have not watched any of the Olympics and I'm not sure why....

    Have a great Sunday!!

i'd find it hard to ignore that adorable kitty. i hope you'll be able to tame her.

and i'm right with you about the olympics..

    big hugs

  46. OMG...what a darling kitten, indeed! I could NEVER EVER imagine not feeding hungry, homeless animals....EVER!
I haven't watched the games either...just not exciting any more, I agree. xoxo Jen

  47. Oh that cat is adorable. I do hope you can tame it a bit and find a home.
I would not stop feeding the mother and her brood of kittens in the cold weather.I find his thought sad.
We did watch the ice skating. I enjoy it but for some reason it makes me nervous because I always feel like they are going to make a mistake or fall. It is always so sad. This year they were marked down if they feel. I really like the pair skating and each year their techniques just get beyond believable. How do they stay up on skates with all the turns and etc.
Loved your thoughts and blessings to you dear friend.

  48. Of course you need to feed the poor cold little kittens! The one is the picture is adorable!!! What a mean man to suggest you not help them survive.
I love to watch the skating, too. Especially Ice Dancing. It's always interesting to hear what the the judges look for when they do the scoring.

  49. That's a beautiful cat. I hope you are able to win it over. I wouldn't be able to restrain myself from feeding them. I feed the birds, squirrels, bunny and occasional raccoon and opossum. I'm glad cats don't show up here, though. They'd be looking for lunch of the feathered variety more than likely.
