A question

Photo from the internet

This is not my bathroom, but we are planning to put beadboard on the walls much like this.  I also have a divider similar to this one between the vanity and the stool.  Our room is wider, but the tub with shower is on the right of the window much like this one shows.

My question is about tile.  We plan on having ceramic tile put on the floor and I would like to also have ceramic tile on the wall around the tub.  I don't want the little 4X4 tiles, but the larger ones.  Some of the guys at the large stores like Lowes tell me that you can put the same tile on the wall as you put on the floor.  I am wondering if any of you have done this?  I'd like your input as to how you like it, if you have.  Or if you have done something different that works great for you, let me know what that might be.  All ideas are appreciated!  We need to get our stuff in the next week, we've been a bit slow in deciding on this part of the remodel.  I'm also wondering how well the tile will look with the beadboard next to it.  Oh, decision, decisions!  I think I know what I want, but I still welcome your input.  Thanks!

Until next time...

  1. We retiled our bathroom with the same tile on the walls and floor. I like the simplicity of the look.
We thought about beadboard but didn't do it and now I sorry we didn't.

Good luck on your renovation, Tammy.

  2. Love the beadboard. Having no tile, I don't know about the other question, but I think it would give a streamlined look. Oh this is exciting!

  3. Good morning, Cheryl! I have done several bathrooms with the beadboard and a tile surround for the shower (I use the white subway tile, since I am almost always working in OLD homes) and I love the two together. I can give this look a thumbs up!

I have only seen photos of tile around the walls that does give a very nice look, too.

Looking forward to seeing what you do! blessings ~ Tanna

  4. I can't wait to see what you do with your bathroom. I need to do mine also, just unsure of what I want.

I am now following you and I put you on my blog roll so I can catch your posts and come over and comment.

  5. You have come to the wrong person here. I am home decorator challanged. To prove that point, just know that I am surrounded by blaze orange walls in bedroom and bathroom, both self inflicked. Sorry I am no help. Good luck. Can't wait to see what you settle on.

  6. Cheryl on our bathroom redo we used 13 inch tile on the floor and 6 and a half inch tile on the shower and tub surround with a border. Our bathroom is smaller and narrow and I thought it would be just too much big tile. If we had used beadboard I think it would have been fine, sort of broke it up a bit. I wish we would have used beadboard, I love the look of it! Hint-think about a floor heating system for under the tiles :)

  7. we did it cheryl and i think it looks great. i emailed you some pictures of it. also, on my blog, if you click on "the nest" there are more pictures.

i used only the large tiles, floor, walls 1/2 way up, the same ones in the shower and i LOVE it!!

maybe you won't love it but at least you can see it and that will help you make your decision. i bought a few bathroom remodle magazines and went from there.

  8. I think you will love having the same tile on the floor, as well as the tub surround. It will give your bathroom a cohesive, and un-cluttered look, and let the accessories shine; unless you would like the tile to be the main attraction.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you decide to do, and more excited for you to get the renovation done :)

  9. My hubby is a builder & he says you can used the tile on walls or floors. Also, you need to use "green" board drywall behind a shower wall to prevent leaks. And there is a grout that is mildew resistant that you might want to check out. We do a lot of business with Lowes & Menards but also use a local tile store.

After 32 years of living in our 4 bedroom house with 1 shower & 1 garden tub, I am finally convincing hubby that I need a shower in my bathroom. The garden tub has to go & it is going to be a major mess!

Good luck with your project. And I love beadboard!!!

  11. we actually had a huge spa tub taken out of our master bath a few years ago, and had the area under and behind where it was tiled with 10 or 12 inch tiles. i like the large tiles. less grout - less mold/stain area.

  12. We will soon be remodeling our downstairs bathroom. I'm pretty sure I am going to go with the beadboard, like in your picture and like we did in the upstairs bathroom. We have ceramic tile in our downstairs entryway and it is coming out. Over the years a few have cracked and it is not a pretty look once that happens. Of course that was 25 years ago that we put that in and I'm sure things have improved a lot since then. I am struggling with what to put on the floors, though. Decisions, decisions.... Good luck with yours!

  13. I love the bead board also! I think you could use the same tile on the floor and the shower walls. When we did our kitchen this past spring, we used a coordinating tile, smaller though, for the back splash. Let me know what you decide and of course, post pictures as we still need to do our bathroom. What's on your floor now? We have linoleum and I HATE IT! It does not come clean at all anymore. Well, I know it's clean, it just doesn't really look clean. Does that make sense? Enjoy your day!

  14. i am a big fan of bead board, i love it because it looks like the old farm house walls my grandmother lived in. and I have seen many bathrooms with floors and surrounds in the same tile and I love the look.

  15. We didn't put tiles on the walls, but I've seen it done & it looks really nice. I also wanted to use those thick, frosted blocks as the shower walls and window, but found they're quite expensive... if only we could have found a place that was remodeling & didn't want theirs anymore.

  16. My only advice is too make sure your tiles are NON SLIP.!! I did a bathroom with the same tiles on the wall and floor once and did not realize how slippery the floor would be,guess I used the wrong kind of tile.!!

I like the bathroom you have described, hope you post a picture when it is finished.

  17. Hi Cheryl!

We really are alike! We are remodeling our downstairs bathroom, and we are putting up beadboard, and yes, I'm painting it white, and putting tile on the floor! We put in a shower enclosure, otherwise it would have been tiled with the same tile that we put on the floor. My tile is 6x6 inch, and I really like it. I think smaller tile looks better around the tub, but I have seen larger tile too, and it's very pretty, I don't think there is much grout around it, so it stays cleaner. Either would look nice. If you are going for the country look, I would go with smaller - just my simple opinion . . . :0)

Can't wait to see the finished room, I'm sure it will be just beautiful!

    Hugs,
    Barb

I'm a huge beadboard fan and have used it alot!
As far as the tile goes-I have seen the same stuff on the floor and shower stalls. And it looked nice. As long as you keep the same color, I think the tile and beadbord will look fine next to each other. That's my 2 cents, for whatever it's worth!

  19. We have tile on our bathroom floors. Please make sure the tile is non slip. A good friend of mine just remodeled his guest bath. He used the same tile on the wall and floors. They are larg tiles and it is gorgeous! He wanted to keep it simple, elegant and not too busy. As long as you're happy that's all that matters. :)

  20. I hope you will show us before and after pictures! We just had our whole bathroom renovated and I did a post on it called "Showers Of Blessings". We had our tub removed and a handicapped shower put in. They can use grout now that will not mildew, you need to be sure that you get that. We do not have a tile floor, because it is too hard if you fall. And I am very clumsy, so I chose a soft vinyl. I think that tile on the floor would be fine as long as the pattern and color don't clash with the beadboard.

  21. I have no idea at all to be honest with you. I would love to see it when it is finished though. Sorry.

  22. I'm late in answering this question, but I say "yes" go ahead. My sister did it wtih 12" slate tiles in a walk-in shower. It is fabulous.

  23. You can absolutely use "floor" tile on the walls. Just make sure that you have the right adhesive and spacers and a good level line to start with. I work for a tile installer and he does floor tile on walls regularly for clients. Don't be afraid to mix tiles for a pattern or an accent band, either. They will look great with the beadboard.
